Take a lover who looks at you like maybe you are magic.~Frida Kahlo
The worst thing in the world is to ask for something, have it promised to you, and then return only to find out it has been promised to someone else.
I had come back after being promised her child. In exchange for having safety with the man she loved, she promised me her first born child. It was time to collect my dues.
I stepped into the little cottage effortlessly and threw my hood back. I was a young witch, only 23. I was much more mature in reality.
The new mother was in the rocking chair, singing a soft lullaby to her baby. Her husband was at the window, hammering away at a the sill.
"How sickeningly sweet." I said, my voice dripping with disgust and disdain.
She looked up, and fear flooded her eyes. "No. You're here."
I smiled vapidly. "Time to pay up."
"Amalie, who is this?" Her husband asked, putting an arm around his wife's shoulders.
I spread my arms. "Why, you haven't heard of me? That's disappointing."
"No one knows her real name. Just an alias." Amalie whispered
"Yeah. I like to be called, 'that witch.' It's hard to find a cool and original names these day. Maleficent pretty much ruined names for all of us." I smirked.
"I promised Cameron to her so we could be together safe from my family." She said, sobbing, gripping the baby close. "James, I'm sorry."
James looked frightful, scared. I wondered why. I found out a few seconds later.
Another figure strode into the room. "James, I am here for your child."
Wait, what? I tapped his shoulder. He threw back his hood-seriously, why do we wear hoods?- and looked at me.
Honestly, I don't know what I was expecting. An old, gnarled man with seven million wrinkles on his face. Instead, I got a man about my age, with handsome features and piercing eyes.
"I think you got the wrong James. This child is mine." I said, crossing my arms and tapping my foot impatiently.
"Uh, no. James promised his firstborn to me if he could be safe with Ama-whatever her name is."
"No, Amalie promised her firstborn to me so she could be safe with lover boy."
The man crossed his arms. "I have the written agreement right here."
I snapped my fingers. "So do I."
The paper winked into my hand. I shoved it into his.
He snapped his fingers, and he shoved a similar paper into mine. I scanned the contents.
This contract states that I do hereby relinquish my firstborn child to the Sorceror.
Blah blah blah bunch of red tape
James Kunry
I crumple the paper up with one hand in frustration.
"So now what do we do?" I mutter, rubbing my temples.
He looks frustrated. "I don't know. We both have been promised the same child. I'm not leaving without that kid."
"Well neither am I." I say, crossing my arms stubbornly.
James and Amalie look back and forth between us.
"Well, there's not exactly a lawyer that deals with these kind of custody arrangements." The Sorcerer asked.
