Her breathing was laboured and it felt like flurries of thousands of arrows were piercing straight through her skull. She was hunched over dry heaving. A burning pain plagued her entire being. Light flashed out of her hands. What was she becoming? Her parents told her she was getting something special for her 18th birthday, right before they were shot dead, and right before he came into her life. She had been told ever since she was little she had a great power inside her and was destined to do tremendous things with it. Was this the power she was told about? Was this why her parents were so protective of her? Even it if was what was she suppose to do with it and why had it been invoked now on her 18th?

All of a sudden she lost control, and three hours later she was in hospital with several broken bones and concussion had him standing there holding her hand.

Three years later

The wind was howling and the torrential rain was bucking down. The street lights reflected in the wet pavement. Along the grey and slippery foot paths people with flash lights were dodging in between each other trying to avoid a collision. Hidden between the crowds were two soaked to the bone friends; Kodiak Mitchell and Alexis Reynolds two locals who go the community college in Hayweather city. They were heading home to their tiny shoebox apartment and both had forgotten umbrellas and raincoats, so instead of taking the bus home they decided to put up with the bad weather and enjoy splashing and playing like little kids on a school flied trip.

"We are such idiots." Alexis had never felt so alive, she was carefree, and layed back it felt good for a change.

"I know, but it's us it would be boring if we both were normal." At this point in time all Kodi could think of is how much he enjoyed spending time with Alex. She might not remember back when they first met, and when he stayed with her in the hospital after gaining her powers, she had forgotten all about them thanks to him. He was there to watch over her until the time came for her powers to unlock them again.

"Try telling that to the people who are looking at us like we should be at a mental hospital." Alex laughed

"Yeah, and I bet if we were them, we would be thinking the same thing." The friends' laughter rang out though the glum crowd, lightening the spirit of the gloomy city. As they came to their apartment Alexis fished around in her bag for her key. She suddenly had a bad feeling swell up within her, she couldn't find her keys, but there was something more than that, something behind that door that she knew she didn't want to come out.

"I can't find them." She said with a worried expression. She tried not to think about the bad feeling she had. She tried to think why she didn't have them, maybe she had misplaced them at school or left them in her locker, but she never did that, ever.

"It's alright I think I have mine" Kodi searched through his bag when he sensed something, he looked over to Alex who was shivering in the cold air. He knew it was going to happen soon but he never thought it would be because of him. Kodi winced as he saw the future play out before his eyes.

"Damn." Kodi not only was he cursing because he couldn't find his keys, but also because of what he saw, and he couldn't change it. Alexis looked over to him; her kind features and bright blue-green were full of concern as she blinked off the glistening rain drops that hung from her long eyelashes.

"I must have left mine inside." Kodi knew what this meant, if he was right and it was the smell of blood coming from the other side of the door Mikey, the door man wouldn't answer, in fact nobody would. The two buzzed in the main lobby.

"Mikey you their?" "Mikey? Someone, this is Kodi of apartment two C, neither me nor my partner have our keys could you let us in please?" There was no reply Alexis started to feel the worry bubble up inside her. Mikey was always there morning, day and night, to cater for late arrivals that may have temporally misplaced their keys. But it wasn't even five o'clock yet. What had happened? She thought to herself.

"What should we do?" Alex couldn't stop the panic from swelling inside her, the bad feeling was getting worse, knew something was going to unfold tonight she just couldn't pick out what.

"Calm down." Kodi knew what this meant they had found them and they were willing to kill him to get to her, and that would definitely unlock her powers, making her easy to locate. He was trying to think of the best possible thing to do, he knew if he called the police she would be endanger, but if he didn't and it started to get late all the bad things would come out and sense her. There was only one option; he had to call him, the only other person who knew. Keep trying to reach someone, I need to make a call he knew this person could help but it didn't stop him worrying about what he would find on the other side of that door.

Alexis felt a wave of relief and confusions wash over her, why had Kodi called the cops? A tall slender man got out of the blue and white car, his black hair was slicked back off of his face, and Alexis knew she had seen him somewhere before,

"Kodiak, good to see you again"

"Derek, you to, but the is something more pressing than small talk right now." Kodiak glanced over to the shivering Alexis as Derek slowly nodded. Kodi pulled Alexis back with him as Derek went to open the door.

She wondered what had gotten Kodi so freaked out he never acted this way, it was like he was worried something was going to hurt her.

"No matter want stay silent if I tell you to run, run no matter what, you run and don't look back." Kodi said; Alexis was confused as to why she would need to run.

"What's going on?"

"Don't worry Alex; it will all be fine I promise." He wanted to promise her that much, he had a bad feeling but he was going to make sure that everything would be okay for her, if it meant he had to sacrifice himself he would.

"GET DOWN." She heard a yell, heard bullets; everything seemed to be in slow motion. She saw him jump in front of her. He looked back at her. "RUN!" He shouted as bullets pounded into him. What, why, Kodi? Why? The questions flooded through her head. He fell, crimson red blood flowed from his wound, his mind went blank and his last thought; I love you Alexis. She felt like screaming but was too shocked. She just stood there, she couldn't run, the love of her life was dead. One minute they were playing like children, now he was dead, and she couldn't do anything, she couldn't move, or speak, or try to comfort him, she saw his chest rise and collapse for the last time. That was it, her best friend, and her rock that kept her solid was gone, never to come back. Gone, why, why Kodi? Why not me? As she looked around she was in the centre of a circle of dead bodies, innocent people caught in the cross fire but why was she still alive. A solid thumping had developed in her head. She felt everything coming back, she had no reason to forget that night anymore, she was the only witness she alone could find the person who did this. But she had to remember, remember what she had learnt that night. She wasn't human; she had a power, a power that was now beginning to flow out of her. She felt the pain go away, and be replaced by a burning sensation to find who ever did this. Her power exploded; finally she let out that scream that had been building up inside her. It was a high pitch scream filled with anger, hate, pain, and loss. She walked over to him and collapsed right beside him. She was exhausted from the power binge, but it gave her the face. The face she would hunt down and make sure that they would never live to regret what they did. She felt some one grab her arm and drag her away. She could barely make out his features, but she knew it was Derek.

"Derek, what just happened?" She knew his name, and who he was, even though they'd never met before.

"Sleep now child." As he said that the world went black.
