What could be worse? Being the new kid, or being the new kid in school, in a big city and knowing nothing about New York because your from a small town in Alabama. I mean it could be worse, I guess. Life in the city just seems odd. We only moved here because of my mom. She is a journalist, she wrote for the newspaper back home. Then one day some editor read an article she wrote and gave her a job. That's how I ended up here. Maybe change is good for me, I mean I've been in my town for eighteen years. I'll be fine... I hope.
It's the first day of school and I'm not going to lie, I am really nervous, I mean REALLY nervous. So, I get up and say this in my head, " I am Maya Tucker and I am eighteen years old and I'm going to get through this... I can handle ANYTHING life throws at me."
I put on my favorite dress. It's light green with pink and yellow stripes and I have my white flats. As I grab my lunch and a granola bar for breakfast, I head right for the door hoping to avoid my mother. " Hey! Where do you think you're going, young lady." my mother said. " Every year you try to escape from your picture being taken. Now go over there and smile nice. Oh and one with your brother and sister." My brother is just ten and his name is George. He's like most boys, he likes dirt, mud, and anything gooey or slimy. My sister is seventeen, one year younger than me. Her name is Annabeth and she is a fashionista. All the time it's "Let's go shopping" or " Maya, you have nothing in style in your closet we need to go to the mall... PRONTO!"
"Are we done yet?" George says. Annabeth and I shake our heads in agreement. I mean don't get me wrong, we love each other but not that much. Then my mom starts on a rant about how we don't spend enough time together. " I wish you would just be nice to each other" and "You are siblings you should love each other" It gets really annoying. I just walked out the door and said" Good luck to you A.B and Curious George. Love you!!!" I got away with that one. Now time to go to school.
