That night I dream of the past

That night I dream of the past.

"Hey Dad." I say as I enter the kitchen. I was ten at the time and had not yet graduated from school yet. Things in school were getting quite harder as the end of the school years, as they wanted to prepare us for anything we might need to know in the future.

"Hey, honey. Happy birthday. You ready for school? Nona made pancakes today." I smile to myself. We rarely had pancakes because the ingredients were hard to find. The only time we had them was for special occasions. And today was my birthday.

"Yep, I got all my things packed up in my bag." I say as I sit down to eat my breakfast. I pour honey over the pancakes and sprinkle some blueberries on top. I cut a piece from the stack and take a bite. Mmm, I loved it. "So what are we doing today?"

"Just the usual. I'm going to work. You're going to school. Nona is staying here to clean up and do whatever she does all day. And when we come home, we are going to eat dinner and then go to sleep." He says smiling. He always did this for my birthday, since the time I could remember. He would act as if it was a normal day, but then bring up a present. It was one of the reasons why I loved my dad so much. He was always joking around and trying to find the best in everyday.

"Sounds good to me dad." I reply playing along. "Anyways I should get going or I'll be late for school." I get up form the chair, wash my hands at the sink, and leave the kitchen.

"Have a nice day, Everly." My grandmother says from the living room where she is reading a book. I say goodbye to her and exit the the house. The streets were busy as usual in the morning. Everyone called this time "rush hour" because everyone was awake and trying to sell their merchandise.

The school was a 20-minute walk from the square. And checking the huge clock in the square showed me that I had enough time to get to school. Halfway to the school, I met up with one of my friends, Lilliana. She greeted me and said Happy Birthday and I smiled back. She was the one friend that I had in school. Everyone else didn't seem to like my positive approach towards things.

When we arrived at the school we quickly went inside and gathered the supplies we needed for the day. The hallways were fairly crowded and all the conversations jumbled up into gibberish language. Lilliana went to talk to her other friends that I didn't really talk to often.  As the classes dragged on, no one seemed to notice it was my birthday. If they did, they didn't say anything.

School finally finished, and I hurried home eager to see what they rest of the day would be like. It was exciting because this only happened once a year.

I rounded the corner to my house and walked up the porch. I opened the door, but there was an essence in the house that told me now was not a good time to be cheery. I heard Nona from a distance talking in a hushed voice to an unknown figure.

"Are you out of your mind? Do you know the dangers you put yourself in? The dangers you put Everly in?" She sounded angry. Nona was never angry.

"I know, I know. I didn't mean for it to get out of hand.  I just wanted to keep everyone safe. It wasn't supposed to happen like this." I realized it was my father. I burrowed my eyebrows. What kind of trouble were they talking about.

"You are going to fix this, Robert. I don't want trouble for her." As if sensing I was here, they greeted me, automatically turning cheerful. "Everly, how was school? Are you excited for tonight?" Nona said smiling completely forgetting the conversation she had with my father.

"Everly, I wanted to give you your gift right now. I know that's not how we usually do it, but I'm not going to be here tonight. I have important business to finish." He gives Nona a look that I can't quite understand what it means.

I give him a sad look but he reassures me. We all go into the living room and I sit down on the couch with Nona while my father goes into the kitchen to get my present.

He reappears in the living room and in his hands is a small gift box. He hands it to me and I open the box eagerly. In the box is a beautiful necklace that is gold shaped as a flying bird. Im struck in awe. It was the most beautiful present I had ever received.

"Everly, I want you to know that I live you. And whatever happens to daddy, even if he is gone, he will be in this necklace" I giggle at the thought. "I have to go now. I love you." He kisses my cheek and leaves the house.

That was the last time I had ever seen him. The memory had suddenly resurfaced at night as I had not remembered that at all.

Thinking back on it, even my father was involved with teleportation. I didn't know it at the time, but everything fell into piece. The mysterious conversation between him and Nona. The goodbye he gave me as if it would be his last. It was his last.

The door to the cell abruptly opens and a Protector I had never seen before enters the room. "Everly Blake, you have a visitor who has requested to see you. Your interrogation will begin shortly afterwards." He doesn't look directly at me although he is talking to me.

I get up from the cot making sure the object I found yesterday is carefully hidden. I wondered who wanted to visit me. They must have been a high rank if they actually were able to visit me. I sighed.

Today was going to be a long scary day.
