Chapter 1
Love. Such a small word, but yet it has a huge meaning. A meaning no one really truely understands. People at school think love is holding hands and eating eachothers faces, while adults say it's something you'll understand when you're older. But me? I think love is heartbreak. It's sadness mixed with fear and happiness. It can be the best feeling in the world or it can haunt you. Atleast thats's how I viewed love after Colton Greyson broke my heart over Summer break.
''You really need to get over him Mae!'' Clayton yelled at me as we were walking to third period.
I met Clayton Adams the first week of seventh grade at Mistmeadow Middle school. It was lunch time when a group of eighth grade boys came up to me and bombed me with questions. They asked me what my name was, my age, if I was single, and if I thought they were cute. When i told them I didn't feel comfortable answering all those questions they started to put there arms around me and one of them even grabbed my ass. When Clayton saw them he came to the recue and told them they needed to leave me alone. They listened because Clayton too was an eighth grader. We've been best friends ever since, and its the beginning of Junior year for me.
Clayton was pretty tall, last time we measured him he was five foot eleven. He had the biggest green eyes that always seemed to see right through me. He also had one of the cheesiest smiles anyone could ever have! He had an athletic body and always maintained it very well. He was the sweetest boy you could ever meet. Any girlfriend he had he took good care of her, but in the end he always said none of them were right for him.
''Clay he broke my heart!'' I said extreamly hurt, ''How could you not be understanding about this?''
Clayton looked down to the groun and stayed silent. ''I'm just saying Clay, you know how much I loved him.'' I continued. ''I know Mae, I know.'' He sighed. ''Well I'll see you at lunch?'' I asked. ''Yup'' he replied dully and walked into his classroom.
I continued walking to third period. It was my English III class. After what happened two weeks ago, before school started, I wasn't so thrilled about coming to school. Especially this class, Mr. Inglewood. He was unorganized and it was really affecting my grade. There wasn't much I could do though because schedule changes were unavailable at Mistmeadow High.
Incase it isn't obvious, I live in a small town called Mistmeadow. Its a small town located in South Dakotah. People here always seem kinda stuck, like they dont know anything else outside of this town. A lot of people do what they can to not have to travel very far out of town limits. Living in a small town does that to you. Clayton and I caught onto this pretty fast and tend to keep eachother busy. Atleast until Colton Greyson came into my life.
I first noticed Colton at the beginning of freshman year, he too was a freshman. He say behind me in fourth period. I couldn't help but think that he was cute, I instantly had a crush on him. Colton was tall, about five foot eleven, he had dark brown hair and big blue eyes that I loved. I secretely admired Colton from a distance until halfway through the year. At the time I had decided that I had to talk to him, even Clayton agreed with me. So in class, I truned around and asked him if he knew when the next football game was with a huge smile on my face. I was pretty confident until he laughed and told me football season had been over for a few weeks. I was so embarrassed,I swear I could feel my face as it turned red and I quickly turned around.
After the end of class Colton caught up to me in the hall and told me that he thought I was pretty cool and that we should hangout soon. We did. By then end of freshman year Colton and I were officially a couple. Although it somewhat distanced me and Clayton because Colton was jealous that I spent so much time with him. Colton and I lasted until the summer before Junior year started, which is about a year.
Colton informed me two weeks ago that he had been cheating on me all summer with Alyssa Sanchez. I should'nt have been so surprised considering that he claimed to be busy most of the summer. I just assumed that he really was. And if that isn't the worst part, he told me he was leaving me for her. Colton Greyson broke my heart and ruined my summer right before school was starting.
My life is over. Right? Right.
''Maelene Pattison?'' called Mr. Inglewood. He was taking role, class was barely starting. ''Miss Pattison?'' he called again. ''Here.'' I sighed knowing lunch was only an hour away but it seemed so much longer.
