The First Phone Call

12 years old

It's around 10 pm and the phone is ringing.
" I got it." I tell my grandmother who adopted me when I was six.
"Hello", I say into the phone.
" Hello. Is this Lauren?"
"Umm...yes. Who is this?" I ask into the phone.
"I think you know who it is."
"Umm. I'm sorry but no I don't." And I really didn't.
"It's Angels" I swear if anymore blood drained from my face at that name I would have lost every drop of blood from my body.
At this point I may or may not have let the words that sailors are so very proud of slip from my mouth.
"Lau-" I don't give her a chance to say anymore before I hang the phone up.
"Lauren, honey what's wrong?" My grandma asks me from the couch.
I slowly go and sit beside her laying my head on her shoulder like I always do when I sit with her.
"That was Angela" My eyes start to water. I have been waiting 10 years for my mom to come back and just when I think that she is gone forever she calls.

Why is life so cruel?

For the next couple weeks she continues to call but I choose to ignore her.
