Rachel's POV
"MOM! HURRY! WE'RE GOING TO BE LATE!" I screamed, making sure my voice traveled through the house.
"SORRY HONEY! I'M JUST ADJUSTING MY MAKE UP, THERE'S GOING TO BE PRESS AT THE AIRPORT!" she yelled back.
"THERE WON'T BE ANY PRESS IF WE'RE LATE, MOM!" I screeched back.
"FINE. GET TO THE CAR!" she shouted.
I sighed with relief. There was no way I would NOT be going to Elite Academy. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity, and I wasn't going to miss it because my mom forgot to put on mascara.
I slung my favorite Forever 21 bag over my shoulder. The contents? Toothbrush, toothpaste, chapstick, and my favorite stuffed animal; a hedgehog named Mr. Snuffles.
...Don't judge me.
I started walking towards my mom's navy Mini. I turned around to face the house I'd grown up in for 15 years. I loved this place so much, Westchester had to be the best place in all of New York. City? Oh please. Suburban for the win.
My older brother, Matt Lee Silverman was leaning in the doorway.
"Hey sis. You're gazing dreamily at the house and not your hot older brother?" he said in fake disbelief.
I laughed and ran to give him a hug. Matt grabbed me and twirled me around. As he put me down, he planted a kiss on my forehead.
"You don't know how much I'm gonna miss you, Matt," I mumbled into his chest.
"Well, at least I don't have to yell at my friends to stop checking you out anymore," he said with a grin.
"Oh, shut UP!" I said with a smirk.
My mom came running down the stairs, then stopped and smiled.
"Awww. Finally, you two are getting along!" she smiled tearfully.
Matt and I looked at each other, grinned, and started sissy fighting.
"Hey, HEY! You two." Our mom glared at us playfully.
I glanced back up at my brother and kissed his cheek.
"I'll see you soon, Matt!" I said, climbing into the passenger seat of the car.
My mom climbed in next to me, and slammed the door shut.
"Ready, Rae? This is the start of a WHOLE new life." She grinned at me as I nodded my head up and down.
She turned the key in the ignition and I took a deep breath. Rolling down the windows, I stuck my face out to look at my brother.
"Bye Rachel."
"Bye Matthew," I replied as my mom stepped on the accelerator.
I didn't stop waving till he was out of sight.
My brother and I were really tight unlike most siblings. Sure, we'd fight occasionally and make our parents pissed off with our screaming, but we were always there for each other and depending on each other. We could talk to each other about anything and we'd always understand. We'd protect each other and share many smiles and laughs.
We didn't use to be this way. We used to fight way more and ignored each other. We started to be closer and more protective a few years ago when I was 7 and my brother was babysitting me. We were at the local park when my brother left me by myself for a few minutes to talk to my friends and I had wandered off. I'd seen my best friend, Grant Xavier Mason with his mom across the road so I had started running towards him. I'd almost got run over by a car, and my brother always thought that was his fault so after that, he became a lot more protective of me.
Now, I was on my own. There wouldn't be anyone to protect me from what was going to happen at Elite Academy. All the hardships and trials that I would face, I'd face them alone from now. I had to protect myself and survive.
I was going to prove to my brother that I could do it too. I'm capable of protecting myself. I could do it.
I could make friends, who'd face things with me. I could face anything that came through my way. I'd show my brother. I wanted to make him proud.
I was going to make him proud.
"I'm so happy for you honey," my mom said, taking my hand and kissing it.
I smiled as the big green highway signs came into view. The big white letters that said Airport jumped into my eyes, as well as the white plane sign. I was going to Elite Island, to Elite Academy. I was going to fulfill my dream.
"I love you mom."
**********
We reached the small private terminal at Westchester County Airport. Surely enough, there was press. Lot's of press.
I sighed, adjusted my hair and grabbed my bag as I opened the door.
Flashes from cameras blinded me as microphones were stuck out in front of me.
"From our own Westchester! How do you feel, going to Elite Academy?"
"Where in Hawaii do you think it's hidden?"
"Mrs. Silverman, are you proud of your daughter?"
"Do you think you'll be the last one standing?"
"Will you be the successful one?"
The last question blew me away.
Will I be the successful one? Will I be the one who's dreams come true?
I didn't know...
"Please, everyone. My daughter needs to get to her plane!" my mom said loudly, pushing everyone away.
The paparazzi parted like the Red Sea and I saw the stairs leading up to the private jet.
I took a deep breath. I wouldn't be coming back here till Christmas.
Oh, I'd live.
I started up the steps, and turned around. I smiled once for a photo, then looked at my mom.
"Bye," I mouthed to her as I climbed up the final steps and headed inside.
My adventure was about to begin.
