For as long as you could remember, Tsukishima Kei never smiled. He was always sitting alone on his desk, his head phones on as he either read a book or looked out the window. Whenever one of your classmates would ask if he would like to play with them, he would always refuse, rolling his eyes and turning his head away as he did so.
"Come on, Tsukishima!" you had called out to him one day as you tugged on his uniform, looking at him with your [E/C] happy eyes. "Play with us!"
With just a look at your face, he immediately shook his head and turned away from you, completely rejecting your offer.
Ever since then, you had made it a mission for you to make him smile at least once, bombarding him each day with corny jokes and funny faces just to try and get even the tiniest smile from the usually poker-faced blonde. At every attempt you made, he would always roll his eyes or transfer to another seat, not giving you the desired reaction you wanted him to have.
Being the persistent eight year old you were, you continued on with your attempt, not letting your past failures bring you down.
"Hey, Tsukishima!" you called out to him, sitting on the seat beside him as a grin stretched across your face. "Why did the tomato lose the race?" you asked him, excited at the chance of making him laugh with one of your signature jokes.
Upon hearing the line, he rolled his eyes. "Please just go away," he turned his back at you, putting on his headphones.
"Well... it's because—" you started but was cut off.
"... because he couldn't ketchup," Tsukishima ended for you, making you widen your eyes and pout.
"Hey! I'm the one saying the joke here!" you whine, poking his sides. Tsukishima just rolled his eyes and swatted your small hands away. "You can go away now."
"Alright, fine. But I'm trying again tomorrow!" you grinned at him, earning a groan.

As you walked to school with your older sister the next day, you were chatting away happily with her, repeating the joke you were going to say over and over again in your mind as to not forget it.
"Have fun at school, [F/N]!" your sister called out to you as soon as you entered the gates of the school, waving cheerfully at you. "I will!" you gave her a toothy grin as she disappeared around the corner.
I wonder if this will finally make Tsukishima smile! you thought to yourself excitedly. You had just gotten a new joke from one of your sister's conversations with her guy friend and you were pretty sure it was funny enough since it made your sister turn red and grin the moment her friend had told her it. And if it won't, I'll have to try again tomorrow!
