The Code

Chapter 1

Kori looked at herself in the mirror, wishing more than anything she wouldn't have to go to high school. She wasn't bullied or harassed, in fact she was quite popular. She just always felt...different.

Kori walked over to her closet and, with a sigh, slung her book bag over her shoulder. She looked out the window to see her bus pulled up to the curb, "Oh crap!" She said as she ran down the stairs and out the door, only to get there right as the bus was pulling away. "WAIT!" She yelled as she ran after the bus. Soon kori gave up knowing she couldn't outrun a bus. She walked gloomily to school.

The whole day at school Kori felt like she was in a different world. She couldn't focus or see straight, the world seemed to spin around her. No matter how much she tried she couldn't hear any words, only mumbling and fuzzy voices.

The day finally ended and she made her way home, walking again, because she didnt feel like dealing with the noisy, overcrowded bus. She turned the corner just in time to see a dark colored van pull away from her house. Kori dropped the bag she was carrying on her shoulder and ran to her house.

"Dad?!" She called desperately as she searched her house. "Dad? Are you here?" She had finally searched the whole house except for the one place she was forbidden to go. Ever since she was a child, she had been told never to enter the basement. Terrible stories were told to her that stuck with her till this point. Kori knew she had to go down, but she couldn't convince her feet to move or her hands to work.

She stood there for a while, thinking it over. She finally grabbed the doorknob and flung the door wide open. Her knees started shaking while she reached over to flip the switch. Nothing happened "oh great...no power" Kori muttered to herself. She went to the kitchen and grabbed an emergency flashlight from the shelf and down she went, into the dark basement.
