Prologue

Grains of wheat waved in the wind, a ceaseless, mesmerizing motion. The sun gave the stalks a golden sheen that flowed with the wind. The dark crimson created sharp accents among the grain, drawing the eye to it.

A pair of green eyes stared intently at the red. They traced the edges of the pools as they slowly spread, soaking into the thirsty earth.

"Penny for your thoughts?"

He looked up, gaze shifting from the red to the two points of blue-grey. "Well, that depends. Do you have a penny?" 

She shifted her feet, getting the right balance to fish in her pocket and pulling out what was in it, displaying it in her hand. "Recognize this?" Among the gum wrappers of various types, was a black cylinder that looked like a military grade flashdrive. He eyed it warily before shaking his head, weakly, in the negative. Giving him an exasperated look, she grabbed the flashdrive, dumping the gum wrappers onto the ground and holding it out to him. 

He took it gently, hands shaking ever so slightly, and turned it in his fingers. "What do you want me to say? It's a fancy flashdrive."

Grinning, she looked at the cuts on his forearm. "The answers aren't just going to pop out in your face; you have to plug it into a computer. And you might want to get those stitched up." 

And then she was gone, melted into the shadows of the trees along the field.
