“I missed you in psychology today, Cass!” Cortnee told me when she got back to our room that evening.

I scrunched up my nose. “I know. I’m sorry. I fell asleep after I got back from the library earlier.”

She sat beside me on my bed and leaned back against the wall. “You really haven’t been sleeping much, have you?”

She didn’t know the half of it. Cortnee only knew half the story of what happened to me. I had managed to leave out the part about being kidnapped and raped, and only explained about the stalking. That was one perk of being so far from where it happened, I wasn’t some sad little basket case in Washington.

            “No, I haven’t,” I finally responded.

She frowned and tilted her head to one side. “Maybe you should stay in and rest this weekend. I mean, you don’t really go to parties or anything, but you’re hardly ever in the room on Saturdays and Sundays.”

“I might actually do that. It wouldn’t kill me to catch up on my sleep.” I spent those two days off of classes in town, or down at our soggy excuse for a beach. Washington isn’t exactly known for sun and fun.

“Everyone has to relax every now and then, you know.” She got up and grabbed her backpack. “I’m gonna go to the cafeteria to study and grab some dinner. Want to come?”

I shook my head. “No, I think I’ll get an early start to my relaxing weekend and sleep some more.”

A grin lifted the corners of my roommate’s lips as she placed a hand on the door. “I think this is the most you’ve slept all semester, Cass.” With a wave and a quick good-bye, she ducked out the door. I sighed and cuddled up to my body pillow, letting my eyes slip closed for the second time that evening. The exhaustion had finally caught up with me.  It felt nice to just relax for once. Colby and Ralphie were far away in my mind, a non-existent memory as the pitter patter of light rain slowly lulled me to sleep.

My phone buzzed loudly on the table beside my bed, yanking me from my peaceful state. A low growl rumbled in my chest as I yanked it off the nightstand and skimmed over the text message I’d just gotten. My brows furrowed at the unfamiliar number.

Hey, Cassie! It’s Cole, from the library.

The name clicked as I remembered my encounter with the blonde-haired, brown-eyed boy from earlier that afternoon. I smiled and sent him a quick reply. We only talked for an hour after that, managing to set up a date for that Saturday before it was over with. I could hardly believe that I had agreed to go out with him. I hadn’t been on one date since I went out with Markus the night I had been kidnapped. Honestly, the thought of going out again made me nervous. It may seem ridiculous, but a part of me was afraid of the same thing happening again. The text I got after the trial ended left me with unsettled nerves every time I thought back to it, which was pretty often.
