In the year 2000, philosophers and scientists alike began not only to dream of, but making grafted prosthetics and human modification a reality. At the turn of the century, it was believed that we should be able to completely mend injury to the body, through whatever means possible. People wanted the paralyzed to walk again, people wanted wounded war vets to have their limbs back, people wanted the blind to be able to see, the deaf to hear, and the mute to speak. Throughout the world, the focus on the war industry and nuclear arms was overshadowed in favor of this salubrious cause. It all began out of good intentions.
In order to have the technology throughout the world, prosthetics and augmentations needed a way to be mass-produced. The corporation Visari Industries was eager to commercialize these products, and make them easier for the majority to obtain. Other corporations saw it as some sort of challenge, and turned the charity into a competition. Transmedical Science had become a very lucrative industry.
Soon enough, militaries began to utilize them, offering wounded soldiers free prosthetics for extended contracts or deducted pay. Soon after, research began going into departments in ways that these augmentations could amplify human abilities. After all, even though first world countries were advancing, wars of terror and radical extremists were still being fought far from home. That was when The Agency was commissioned by the American government. Over two decades, this organization nearly perfected mechanical prosthetics, and created microaugmentation. With this, The Agency created a new breed of soldier: the 'Agent'. With the strength of many men, inhuman agility, impossible sensory output: the myth of the 'supersoldier' had become a reality. Its first subjects were impressionable orphaned youths, stuck without pasts, nor with futures. A good amount of the research was leaked to corporations, who saw the military applications of this kind of technology as extremely profitable. And so, human augmentation became less about improving human health, but more about endorsing warfare and proxy battles.
This ignorant use of augmentation caused civilian uprising and demand for reform. Corporation heads and government officials saw this sort of public dissent as good opportunity. More open figureheads and larger groups were labeled as radicals and occasionally terrorists. The government and military responded accordingly, which in turn caused these protest groups to become exactly what they were being accused of. Playing on the fear of the masses, governments were able to infringe upon the citizens' securities, and surveillance was generally legalized.
Terror groups and private military contractors run rampant, doing as they so desire in accordance to one another. In an attempt to better the human being, the world has cast itself into a state of war. Tension between nations and corporations rise, and the only result is more deterioration.
It is the year 2029. It is no longer a time of protest and liberty. It is an age of advancement, an age of technology. It's an age of tyranny and reform, an age of surveillance and espionage. Governments and corporations infringe further and further upon the individual. If you want to change something, you're bound to make enemies. Idealism means nothing if it isn't funded.
The Age of Deterrence is over.
The Age of Terror has begun.
