I woke up the next morning shaking and tired. I couldn't sleep because of my fears for today. I can't speak infront of people for the life of me. And that's with the speech infront of me, but I haveto come up with things on the spot. For sharing what we did over the summer, I was going to say I went to Disney world. But nope, I had to sound stupid. I put on a flower print skirt with a white tank and a shambre shirt over it. I curled my hair and did a little more makeup than usual. I put on my black flats and grabbed my bag. Mickey followed me down and I took her out. We walked back in and went to the kitchen. I sat down and stirred the spoon around my bowl of cereal.
"That's it. What's up? You never play with your food." My dad said after five minutes.
"Do you feel okay?" My mom asked worried.
"Physically, I'm perfect. Mentally, I'm terrible. I'm dreading school today."
"Why?" My dad asked.
"I have to give my all about me presentation."
"Don't worry about it, you'll do fine. I mean she can't fail you on something about yo because she doesn't know you." My mom said.
"Its not the grade, its the speaking."
"You'll do fine. Now eat or else I'll fail you in breakfast." I sighed and slowly started to eat. That's another thing when I'm nervous I have no appetite and my stomache cramps like crazy. My parents usually understand me or at least try to, except when it comes to this and a few other things. The only one who really understands me is Kyle. We both take after his mom. She's an author and that's the big factor that brought me and Kyle to hanging out so much when we were little. She was never home so he stayed at my house a lot, we shared a babysitter and when he got old enough she stopped coming and it would just be the two of us. My parents were home more than Kyle's but still never really home. They're both lawyers so that's the main reason they don't understand why I hate and can't speak infront of people. I took a few bites of my cereal, said goodbye, and picked up Brittany. She was waiting for me on her porch, when I pulled up. We drove off and I told her about the babysitting fiasco. "He has an older brother?" She asked.
"Yeah, Chad."
"Well, is he cute?" She asked. Of course she is because she's trying to get me to date. She's relentless. And if she's not asking that for my sake, its for her, although she already has a boyfriend. I don't get how we're best friends, we're polor opposites.
"Him and Thomson could be twins."
"He's the total package Cal." She said to me getting that smile that tells me she's up to no good.
"Trust me he's not. He's only a little less annoying than Thomson. He talks in an English accent all the time. He even acts like he's England royalty."
"You could act like he's one of your book characters."
"Brittany, you are so lucky I'm driving or else I would punch you."
"Message received. So, what would you like to talk about?"
"I got my big birthfay gift from my parents last night. A little maltipoo. Her fur color is the same as my hair's so I named her Mickey. She is the most adorable thing ever."
"Aww." She said as we parked. We walked into the building and she asked, "we still on for after school?"
"Why of course darling." I replied and went to my locker. We were headed to a little French café. I went to English and me and Thomson were the last to present. Thomson went and presented all stupid jocky stuff. Then, it was my turn. I was shaking like insane and felt like I was going to pass out. I walked up there and set my bag on the chair then stepped infront of the podium. "First, I brought my chin rest for my viola." I said and pulled it out. "I've played viola since I was three but I've never been in any sort of orchestra. I learned through a private teacher till I was in third grade and now I self teach my self new things." Everyone seemed so bored, great. "Next, I brought my friendship ring from my friend Brittany. We've been friends since forever. Also, I brought this book its my favorite. I love to read. This ribbon I brought, although I got it last night. Last night I came home and my parents said that my big birthday gift came. My birthday was the first day of school this year. So, I went upstairs and found a little maltipoo sitting on my bed with this ribbon around her neck. Lastly, I brought these Mickey Mouse ears. My cousin Kyle who just started college took me to Disney World over the summer and he got me these. Instead of Calli, people used to call me Mickey. But as I got older I changed it for a few reasons but he still calls me that." I finished and went back to my seat before anyone could say anything. Right after I sat down, the bell rang and I was one of the first few out. Math was my next class. I walked in taking my usual seat in back and Thomson took his seat infront of me. "Good job on your presentation Mickey." He turned around and said to me.
"Don't call me that." I told him. Oh great he knows another nickname.
"I can't call you Calli, I can't call you Mickey! What can I call you?"
"Nothing."
"Okay, nothing."
"No, nothing because you have no reason at all to speak to me."
"What if I need to?"
"MicKayla. But, only if its a must. Otherwise, I would like to go back to pretending you don't exist." He turned around after that. At the end of class the teacher passed back our tests. I got mine and smiled. Thomson got his and sighed.
He turned around and asked, "what did you get?"
"A+." I replied happily.
"Really, I got an F." He said and looked upset. "I got zero right. Do you think you could tutor me?" He could tell I was about to protest and added, "please I could really use it."
"Fine, but on my conditions. Saturday morning the library 9 a.m. sharp. If you're even a minute late I'm leaving. You only get one chance so don't blow it. You're going to be focused. No phone out, no inviting friends, or anything like that. Math and math only. Its only going to be an hour long too." Then the bell rang and I picked up my stuff and left. Britt and I found a table and sat there drinking our foamy lattes and eating our rainbow assortment of macaroons.
"So, let's talk homecoming. What are you wearing?" Brittany asked.
"Nothing." I replied flatly.
"Well, that's quite a bold choice. But I think it would benefit everyone if you wore something." She replied.
"No I mean, I'm wearing nothing because I'm not going." I fought back.
"You have to though. I mean we graduate next year. We don't have many left and you've never been to one."
"And I don't plan to."
"Please, it would make me super happy." I shook my head no and then, "ringpower." She said puting out her fist.
"Ringpower." I replied glumly touching our rings together. She smiled and I said, "this was your plan all along with the rings wasn't it? I mean now you can get me to do a lot of things and I don't get a choice."
"Exactly." She replied cheerfully.
"This means I'm going to prom and all the other dances too, doesn't it?"
"You catch on fast."
"Great." I said sarcastically and rolled my eyes. "Why do you even want me to go, I mean you have your boyfriend. I'll just be thirdwheeling."
"You're my bestfriend and nobody will be the third wheel." I love how confident she is. But, I know that isn't true.
"You ready to go?" I asked.
"Yeah and Saturday afternoon dress shopping."
"I'm not even going to fight because you already won this." She smirked and we got in my car. I dropped her off and walked into my house. My parents weren't home because today they had a major court case that will get all their time and energy and focus. I walked into the kitchen and found Kyle sitting in there.
"Hey Mickey."
"Hey." I replied smiling.
"So how's school?" I took a seat across from him at the table. I told him everything from the beginning to the very end. "Sounds like you've had an eventful three days and most took place outside of school."
"Exactly."
"Just ignore Thomson and use this school dance thing as an advantage against Brit."
"Thanks for the advice."
"Anytime." He replied and started talking about college.
