Almost There

"Shush!" All four girls hissed at once.

"Who's shouting? And why?" Sapphire whispered.

"Hi, I'm Collin." His sandy hair rustled as his hand reached forward in greeting. Harriet and Sapphire stared at it as though it was from the planet Mars.

"This is Harriet and Sapphire, forgive them, they haven't seen a boy in at least weeks!" Susan hurriedly explained.

"It's fine." Collin brought his hand back.

"Shush, I hear something," Lake whispered, bringing her finger to her lips. Then they all heard footsteps. "It's coming from that direction." She pointed ahead down the corridor.

"I know a place, I've been wondering around this building long enough to know a few dusty corners they never bother looking," The  young boy took Lake's hand and lead them down some corridors and turned some corners until they reached a small room that could barely fit three of them in.

"Wait, you expect us to fit in there?!" Mary shouted.

"Mary, shut up and get in," Harriet said through gritted teeth, motioning to hurry. The heavy steps were getting closer. Mary, oblivious to the man coming her way, backed up against the wall with her hands in a surrender. Susan felt a knot in her throat. 'We can't get this far only to get caught again!' she thought.

"Harriet shut the door! Leave her, if she doesn't want to come!" Lake hissed.

"I always knew you hated me!" Mary screamed.

"OI! You, what are you doing out 'ere? Come 'ere." A man turned the corner and, after hearing Mary's yells of protest, drags her away, oblivious to the six shocked faces squished into the tiny cupboard behind his back. After a couple of seconds of stunned silence, Harriet closed the door. It creaked shut and she turned on the lights.

"Follow me." Collin pulled down a ladder and started climbing. All the girls climbed the ladder to find themselves on the roof watching a beautiful sunset with reds, oranges and pinks thrown across the sky. Sapphire sighed.

"Sunset, the prettiest time of the day!" She said. She rested her head on her hands and stared at the scene of pure beauty. Collin, however, was still walking along the beams of metal, leaping from on to the other. Together they followed him until the sun set, then they lay one next to the other and fell asleep.
