Imagine you are in a boat, rain is pouring down then lightning strikes the boat next to you, and it sinks. This happened to explorers like Ferdinand Magellan. Magellan sailed across the whole world with a fleet of ships just to prove a point. He suffered through weather and wars on his mission. In the end one out of about five ships returned. Along the way many people died, even him. But when that one ship came back he was recognized as a hero. He discovered many things along the way, like the Pacific Ocean. I believe he made a huge impact on our world today.
First of all, Magellan brought important knowledge back to Spain. He discovered an easier route around the world, and the Pacific Ocean. According to history.com, "Ferdinand discovered the biggest ocean. (The Pacific)." He basically took a wrong turn and ended up in an undiscovered part of the world. Also on his long journey he mapped everything he came in contact with. When the ship came back the crew members that survived shared all of his information that we still use today.
Now, I will explain why little things he did along the way made a big difference. If you are lost and there is no one to help you, a map will show you all of your surroundings and you can use that to guide yourself to where you need to be. Magellan made multiple maps of the area he sailed. This helps many explorers and even helps people get to different places today too. Ferdinand's journey helps us more than you think. The author of "Live Science" stated that the Strait of Magellan mapping was proved invaluable to the European understanding of the world. In my opinion, I think that his maps were very important.
Moving on to how Magellan's actions helps us today. From waht I read, the author of angelfire.com states, "He named the Pacific Ocean and he was mostly famous for proving to everyone the world was a sphere." people used Ferdinand's maps to help create our maps today. Currently three of his original maps are owned by Yale. Magellan's wisdom helped many explorers after him. He tested routes and found the best and easiest one, this is known as the straits of Magellan. Other explorers ue this passage to explore other unknown areas. The US Navy's aircraft carriers also need an easy way to get around the world into other territories.
In conclusion Ferdinand Magellan made a very beneficial effect on the whole world. Everyone around the world uses his knowledge without realizing it. Looking at a globe or maps you see the passage to the Pacific, The Straits of Magellan. Try to envision what the world would be like if he hadn't gone on this expedition.
