I let out a relaxed sigh as I laid back onto the lounge chair, soaking in the sun. Turning my head, I smiled at Amber, who was laying belly-down on the chair next to mine.
"I'm really glad we got to hang out today. It's been quite a while," she said, causing me to feel a pang of guilt.
"Yeah, and it's mostly my fault," I shrugged, flipping over to lay on my stomach. "There's just been a lot going on, ya know?"
She nodded in response, shutting her eyes in order to relax.
"So," she spoke. "How are you and Chris? Have you finally confessed your undying love for one another?" she joked, rolling her eyes.
"Something like that," I mumbled.
"Hey babe, sorry I'm late, traffic was a bitch on the way back from 7/11. I brought you a slurpee though," a familiar voice spoke, interrupting our light conversation. I sat up, removing my sunglasses to see who it was.
He was about six feet tall from what I could tell, and his skin was an even chocolate color. I continued analyzing this foreign-yet-familiar character before he finally turned to me, smiling.
"Oh hey Bri!" he exclaimed, pulling me in for a hug. I hesitated for a moment before I finally realized who it was.
"Trey? When did you come back to L.A?" I questioned, happy as fuck.
"About three months ago. My parents moved out of this district, so I had to go to another school. I'm getting my own place down here soon though," he replied, letting me go.
"Damn, I need to tell Chris!" I laughed, turning to Amber.
"So," I continued. "Y'all are dating? Since when?"
"We've been in contact ever since I moved last year. Eventually we got closer, and it just happened," Amber shrugged, grabbing Trey's hand.
"Hmph," I smirked, looking at them. "You guys are cute."
"Thanks," Amber spoke, blushing. Trey gave her hand a light squeeze before continuing.
"Imma go hit up the guys and see wassup. Love you babe," he said, giving Amber a peck on the lips.
"Love you too babe," she cheesed, watching him as he walked away.
I cleared my throat, interrupting her daydream.
"When were you gonna tell me you had a man Ambs?" I questioned, kind of hurt that my best friend would keep such a thing away from me.
"I don't know Bri, I really wanted to tell you but I didn't know when. You're always busy with Chris," she snapped back.
I thought about what she said for a second, slumping back in my chair. She was right.
"You're right. I'm sorry," I huffed.
"It's cool Bri, you know about Trey and I now, don't you?" she giggled. "Anyways, we should go back in the pool. This heat is becoming unbearable!" she exaggerated, fanning herself off for emphasis. I agreed, following her into the cool water and propping my arms up on a pool noodle as I paddled my feet to keep me afloat.
Amber struggled to stay on top of her pink flamingo floaty, so I used it to my advantage. Quietly swimming next to her, I pushed my pool noodle to the side, and dove under the water, closing my eyes and holding my breath. Once the water laid still, signaling that Amber was on top of her floaty, I jumped out of the water, grabbing her and pushing her off with me.
"Bri what the fuck?!" she yelled, splashing water onto me, laughing loudly.
"You should've seen the look on your face man!" I chuckled, wiping the water out of my eyes and smoothing down my wild, wet curls.
