My Problem with Fish Mooney

Fish Mooney. Fucking Fish Mooney.

Okay so this mainly applies if you watch Gotham on FOX, which as of now is on a break. I am highly aware that Gotham is far from being the best thing on TV, in fact it can be pretty darn bad at times (just watch the season 2 finale and you'll know), but I continued watching it mainly because my dad absolutely adores the show and watches it during dinner.  And I'm going to warn you, this contains spoilers for seasons 1 and 2 of Gotham.

So, in case you didn't get the idea that I thoroughly dislike Fish Mooney, I'll make it very clear here. I fucking hate Fish Mooney. Even her name sounds bad and bitter, like a rotten and mushy two-months-old pie you found in the trash can of a high school canteen.

My problem with Fish started since the very first episode she appeared in. It was the way she acted that really ticked me off. All she does in the show is glare at people then twist or shake her head while speaking useless shit so darn exaggeratedly that it makes you wanna go on Ebay and buy a fucking chainsaw just to murder her (idea inspired by Preacher on AMC, which is a great TV show; go watch it).

I am highly aware that the purpose of her existence in the show is to help develop Penguin as a character, but this doesn't excuse her from something that has often bugged me about many fictional characters nowadays; Fish lacks any form of character motivation. In case you don't understand what I'm talking about, then ask yourself; what makes Penguin such an interesting character? What is his purpose in doing what he does in the show? The answer has been clearly established throughout season 1 to 2; Penguin's driving force is his unrequited love for his mother (and eventually, his father) as well as desire for honor and respect, something he lacks due to his physical impairment, hence making him want such qualities even more. Now, let me ask you another question; what makes Ed Nygma such an interesting character? What is his purpose in doing what he does in the show? The answer, yet again, has been clearly established throughout season 1 to 2; Ed is controlled by his overwhelming need to conquer his insecurities and quirks, which pushes him over his mental boundaries, causing him to commit crimes and delve into a dark path. Even Galavan, who I don't particularly like, has a pretty sweet driving force (a.k.a. the whole Dumas thingamabob) that contributed in making his character ten times better than if he was just a shallow arsehole who wanted power because why not.

Now that I'm getting a bit off topic, let me ask you. What is Fish's purpose in doing what she does in the show? Well, honestly I don't fucking know other than that she is simply a shallow arsehole who wants power because why not. THIS IS THE PROBLEM. This makes her so one dimensional and uninteresting, yet she keeps having so much screen time that I just want her to die and let the storyline move on.

At this point of my pretty lengthy essay, I shall recount how over the moon I was when Fish died in season one. I honestly screamed out of joy when she fell of that fucking building and fist pumped my parents and baked a batch of chocolate chip cookies just to celebrate her death. Yeah, I actually did, and they tasted so fucking good. And let's be honest, the show was so much better after her departure. (Message approved by Jeremy Jahns and a bunch of critics, so yeah.)

And of course FOX had to fuck it all up again by re-introducing her by the end of season 2 with new stupid powers. She comes back with the same smug look and the not that menacing but incredibly annoying facial expression and whiny voice that made me immediately loose all my appetite the night I watched that episode despite the fact that my family was having a pizza party. Why's she back anyways? Her purpose of developing Penguin into being this daring and dangerous crime boss is already completed, and other characters such as Penguin's father and Tabitha have been doing the same throughout season 2 in a much faster and more interesting way. I have also talked about this with my form tutor, who is awesome and occasionally watches Gotham; we agreed the only thing that would make Fish's entry back to Gotham slightly interesting is if she ever encounters Galavan (who regains his memories) and a showdown occurs, but yet again FOX had to screw this up by killing Galavan with a bazooka. We were actually looking forward to have Penguin do the same to Fish by the end of the season finale but OF COURSE SHE HAD TO LIVE. UGH WHYYYYYYYY. What's she going to contribute to the remainder of Gotham anyways? All she does it stop the show from moving smoothly and the storyline to jump on to things that viewers actually want to see, like the development of the Joker and Bruce Wayne into Batman. I swear people are even boycotting Gotham because of Fish, so if Gotham ever gets cancelled or anything, I'm blaming it all on her.

Thus, as a conclusion, Fish is unbearably annoying, has no purpose in life (as sad as it sounds) and makes the show as an overall worse. So this is my problem with Fish Mooney.

Fuck you, Fish Mooney.
