Chapter 28 Back to Reality

We landed back at the Hartsfield-Jackson Airport.  Kevin, me and a few other’s in first class got off the plane first.  We headed to the section of the airport to claim our luggage. Kevin grabbed our things and we headed out to the pickup area waiting for Devin to pick us up.

As soon as we stepped out we saw Devin leaning on his black Range Rover LR-V6 supercharged.  Devin grabbed a couple bags from Kevin as he opened the back of his SUV.  Moving back to the passenger side he hugged me and turned to help me into the truck.

“How’s it going Nikki?”

"It’s going; can’t complain.  How are you doing?”

“Just chillin right now; ain’t much else going on.”

“Did you enjoy your trip?”

“Yeah I did, until we had to come back so Kevin could get started on that case.”

“I know, I did all I could to get the client to let me or one of the attorney’s help him, but it was no use.”

“I’m sure you tried, but its ok I guess I can go back to work and keep my other days for future use.”

“I think that’s a good way to think about it Nik.”

“You two ready?”

“Yeah man and thanks again for picking us up.”

“No worries dude.”

The rest of the ride was quiet.  It game me time to think and clear my head.  I didn’t want to start a fight when we just had the most beautiful almost two weeks together, but this was just really bothering me.  Well I’m just gonna bring it up.  I just hope I don’t piss him off.  We pulled into my drive way and I gathered my things.  Kevin opened my door and I got out with my keys in my hand.

“Thank you Devin, I really appreciate you driving us from the airport.”

“No problem Nik, have a good night.”

“Thanks, you do the same Devin.”

“Kev, you want me to take you home or what?”

“Yeah, give me a sec to walk Nikki to the door and make sure she’s safe.”

We walked to my door in silence once we were there I reached up and pecked Kevin on the lips.

“I guess I’ll talk to you later huh?”

“Naw let me go tell Devin you are taking me home later.”

“Well, ok.”

“Devin, thanks for the ride, but I’m gonna let Nikki take me home later or I’ll just stay the night here.”

"Ok, that’s what’s up then…I’ll see you tomorrow bruh.”

“Yep, later man.”

I watched as Kevin and Devin stood there talking and I turned to open the door.  I wasn’t sure how long they were going to stand there and talk, so I headed upstairs.

I took all of my things upstairs and sat them down on the floor not worrying to put them away tonight.  I just wanted to take a hot shower.  I turned to walk into the bathroom and I saw the light blinking on my answering machine. 

I looked and I had four missed calls.  I hit the play button and I heard Shaun’s voice.

Saturday June 14th

“Nikki when I talked to you yesterday I know you said that you and your boyfriend were on your way out of town, I tried calling your cell phone, but all I got was your voicemail, since you never picked up I decided I would call your home phone hoping you would check your messages and call me back.  Hope to hear from you soon.”
