(A couple of years have passed. Poppy is now almost 5 years old and Aiden is 2.)
Ed’s POV:
I can’t believe that Poppy is 5 years old today. I can remember the day when Taylor and I brought her home from the hospital like it was yesterday.
Both sides of our families are in town to celebrate and we’re throwing Poppy a big birthday party. For the last few years on Poppy’s birthday, Taylor and I have been on the road. Of course, we brought Poppy and Aiden with us, but I felt like we weren’t giving them enough attention.
Just a few months after Aiden was born, Taylor finished up another record and it took off. It was more popular than any of her other albums. I put out another record recently, so I have been out of town a lot promoting it. Taylor and I also decided to do a comeback tour, as co-headliners. We brought Aiden and Poppy with us, and it has been a real joy, let me tell you. Being up there on stage doing what I love with the people I love most was the greatest feeling in the world. Taylor’s mom and dad still came to every show and toured with us, so they always had Poppy and Aiden in the soundbooth with them since Taylor and I obviously couldn’t watch them while we were in stage. Every night while Taylor and I were performing our first track together, “Everything Has Changed” we would look out there in the audience and Poppy would be singing it back to us. Nothing makes me happier.
Poppy is definitely going to be a musical genius. She loves to sing and got Taylor’s awkward dance moves. I bought her a guitar for her 5th birthday, so I’m excited to give it to her. She always gets a hold of my little Martin guitar and tries to play it, but it’s just too big for her. But she still thinks she can play it. And I let her.
Aiden of course loves music as well. He doesn’t have a real guitar yet and hasn’t figured out how to hold a guitar or anything like that, but he has several toy guitars that he loves. He’s got one right now that I had specially made that whenever you press a button where you’re supposed to strum, it plays one of my tunes. He loves it. He won’t let it out of his sight or hands. I’m so glad our kids have grown up to love music, starting at such a young age. Taylor and I got very lucky.
Over the past two years Taylor and I have been trying to have another baby, but things just haven’t been working out. We both went to the doctor to make sure that there was nothing wrong with either of us, and it turns out there’s nothing wrong. I guess Poppy and Aiden came so easily we aren’t used to having to try hard. But I just know that we will have more kids soon.
We’re having a party at our house today for Poppy’s birthday so Taylor has been running around like a chicken with its head chopped off for most of the day. As I walk downstairs from putting Aiden down for a nap, I see her sitting on the couch, and I think she’s crying.
“Baby, what’s with the tears? Today is a happy day!”
“I know babe, they’re happy tears. I just can’t believe how fast our babies are growing up.”
“I know, I can’t either Taylor. But hey, just think, soon we could have another little one in our lives.”
“I don’t know, Ed. I’m starting to get worried.”
“Baby, we know there’s nothing wrong with either of us. We just have to keep trying. That isn’t a bad thing is it?”
“Oh no of course it’s not! I just want another baby so badly.”
“Come here baby.”
She got up from the couch and made her way over to me. I put my hands on her hips and pulled her in close.
“We do have some time right now,” I said as our lips were almost touching.
“Oh do we now?”
