I had never encounter Vanessa's father before and I never wanted to. Not for my own sake but for hers. I didn't want to cause any trouble for Vanessa, if anything I wanted to find out who she once was. I wanted to make her realize how pure she truly was and how she didn't need to worry about anything if she was with me. I would always protect her and be there to listen when she was struggling when it came down with drawl or anything in general. I'd do what I could as long as she'd love me and it appeared as if she did. The feeling was completely mutual. As I hoped out of the car and shut the door behind me, the gates to her driveway began to part ways with each other, her father emerging from a distant pathway, a cigar between his lips and I knew I had to meet him eventually. Swallowing the lump in my throat I lurked over towards him, ready to shake his hand and he simply eyed me.

"Stay right there." He stated, eyeing the trunk of my car and then me, causing me to stop in place.

"Listen kid, my daughter is um.." He started, removing the cigar from his lips and blowing smoke into my face. Tensing up slightly I continued to stare at him, my lower half resting on the hood of Mary Jane. "everything. She needs me as much as I need her. That means that some day, I have to let her go and when I do she needs to be with a man, not a boy, that's what you are."

"I love her." I confessed genuinely, love looking into his eyes.

"Yeah, sure you do." He stated, looking back at the gate and then me, as the gates closed back hastily.

"I know what kind of guy you are. Once upon a time I used to be the same thing." He admitted, eying the houses around us, the hand that held his cigar resting above his left wrist, a few inches away from his wrist. As he continued to talk, my eyes followed his. Although I was tempted to follow them exactly and gaze at the houses around us I chose not to, not wanting to break the eye contact that I wasn't receiving. For a moment he simply stared off into whatever he chose to and my eyes drifted off in the direction of the gate. The lively green around the driveway and the vibrant flowers took away any anxiety in that moment, "You know what that means?" I shook my head slightly, looking back at him. "That means one day you'll leave her for somebody else and break her heart."

My jaws began to tighten as I stared at him deadpan. Leave her? Break her heart?

" That can't happen and I won't let it." He sternly said, shaking his head down at me.

"You don't know us." I shrugged, my hands still positioned in front of my crotch.

"I don't want to." He blankly said, shrugging back. "Kid, I don't even want to know you. You're going to get in your car and leave. You weren't welcomed here to begin with, whether you knew that or not so, don't come back because if you do, things won't end well for you."

"What would you do?" I questioned, shifting my position. Mr. Raymond licked his lips before removing the shade that were attached to his shirt pocket, flipping them out, and slipping them on.

"I'm a man of my word, I hope you understand that. I suggest you hit the road. There's no need for you to come back." He stated, forming his lips into a thin line as he turned away from me.

My lips parted in disgust as he headed for the gates, giving them a slight push and walking back towards the house. I stood out until he disappeared. How could he make a simple assumption based off of how I look? Not once has he seen me or held an ideal conversation with me. He knew nothing. I wasn't anything like his younger self. I couldn't have been. I would never hurt Vanessa.
