The Last

It was a cold February. The sky was dark, and maybe even the slightest bit creepy. Okay, it wasn't that creepy, but think of it like it was as if a murderer was silently following you home. That's how I felt as I walked down my street. I didn't really know what to do while walking home. I usually played on my phone and ignored my surrounding until I would pass some lights. Today was different. The air, the sounds, the lights, everything. I continued walking the same as I normally would, but kept noticing the lights flicker and the bugs stopping. I didn't know what was happening. I don't think I wanted to know anyways. I hurried into my house and closed the door behind me. I set my jacket on a chair and pulled out my laptop. As it loaded up, I went and changed into my nightwear, which consisted of short shorts and a simple tank top. After I finished changing, I walked to the window and looked out. I couldn't really make anything out as my windows were covered with little droplets of water, but I was able to make out a small glow coming from nowhere. It was suspended in the air as if it was telling to come out and inspect it. I rubbed my eyes and told myself I was just sleepy. I rushed down the stairs when I heard my laptop welcome me by sounding the classic Windows startup sound. I clicked on my browser and pulled up the news and my blog. I let out a sigh when my wifi decided to be a slow poke. I got up from my comfy chair and walked to the kitchen to get some snacks to munch on while I blogged. I grabbed a glass and poured some milk to eat with my Oreo's. As I was looking through my pantry for a Styrofoam plate, I heard a faint metallic noise. I don't really know what was going on, but I sure as hell knew I needed to get out of the kitchen and back into my homely room. I checked the news only to find it was blank. Huh, that's funny. First, the lights flicker, then I find a super freaky orb floating outside, and now the world's news shut down. I am totally confused. I went to find my phone and quickly noticed it laying on my desk. I turned the phone on and also expected it to have no signal. Luckily, to my surprise, it did have signal. I checked all my messages. "Sam, you have to run. Run away now. Humans are being hunted and this message is being tracked at this very moment. I don't know who or what is doing this but you need to run. I am positive you'll know how to fix this. If I don't survive this, Sam, I love you, okay? We're best bbuds to the end. Oh gosh, I hear the screams. Run to the place we spent our childhood together. If I live, I'll be there." I don't know if I cried or not, but I only remember that I got up and immediately went to look for my survival backpack. It contained a knife, medicine, several lighters, food, a canteen, and etcetera. I gathered some clothes and put it in the bag. I grabbed my comfiest tennis shoes and was careful not to go out to the front where the glow was. I went out the back and crawled under the fence easily, since I am pretty slender. I remembered that I had put a small journal and a few pencils in my pack. I quickly retrieved it along with my map of the area. I was going to walk about hundred or so miles. I had to do it carefully, not to be caught by the "unknowns" as I called these things hunting humans. I really hoped that I would meet other survivors along with me. I crept through the night and decided to stop at an abandoned warehouse that I would call home for a few hours. I pulled out my journal again and jotted down the date. It was good to remember it in case. I quickly wrote all the holidays I remembered down. I also wrote what was happening. After that, I pulled out my map and made marks on where I was and where I was going at what time, also where I would stop. I sat for a moment to think about everything. I thought about where my family was, how the government was doing, and how other areas are being affected. I soon fell asleep and woke up about 2-3 hours later. Need I remind you that I left at around midnight. I peeked out of a boarded window and saw nothing, but to make sure, I checked through all windows. It was clear, so I opened the door. It creaked as I tried to open it as slowly as I could. I walked along the road until it reached an area with a forest. I continued into the forest, while writing on a map on where I was going. At this point, I believe it's finally time I give you some kind of an introduction, right? My name is Sam and my age isn't really a concern. I guess I would say I'm athletic. I guess that's it, really. Also, the person who is my best friend is Lucas. We grew up together and we swore we would protect each other to the very end. Now, here I am, hoping he's safe. I'm sure that's enough of an introduction. I eventually came to a stop and sat in the snow. I pulled out my knife and went looking for some branches to make a trap to capture a rabbit. Eventually, I gathered enough and pulled together a trap for rabbits. I waited a few hours and was able to catch a single rabbit. I'm sure I could make it last though. I took out my small hatchet and cut down some small trees and started a small fire and limited the smoke that came out. I stuck a flat stone near the fire to heat it up while I skinned the rabbit and cut the rabbit into pieces. I heard the fire crackle and decided it would be appropriate time to put the rabbit, so I did. I placed the chunks of rabbit on the large and flat stone and heard it sizzle. I let it sizzle for a minute or so before turning it with a twig. I am no chef, but I needed to cook it evenly and as rare as possible. I finished cooking and pushed the stone in my direction with the hatchet. I ate humbly as I needed to conserve food for later. I continued walking again. Hours would pass by very slowly as I was walking. The cold air of February didn't help either. I was happy to see a few animals run into my and sprint away quickly. I took a deep breath and closed my eyes for a second to just hope for the best. I let out my breath and opened my eyes. It was finally time to throw away my past life and head to Kertina to find my best friend.

When I arrived at the place I spent my childhood in, all I could see was burnt down houses and trees. I don't know if it was the doing of the "Unknowns" or maybe it was just the people that were smart enough to burn the houses down to not let themselves get killed for supplies. I tried to find salvageable items around the burnt house, but I was only able to find a crowbar, a few boxes of matches, and some cloth. I ran to my middle school and went behind the building; I saw nothing. Damn, where would he be if he was going to hide. I went back to the front and sprinted towards the highschool. I found my way into the building through the top and climbed into the vent, where I eventually found myself listening intently for any signs of life before jumping down. "What was that?" I heard a female voice say. I quickly picked a random classroom to hide in and hid behind a bookcase.

"Split up. If it's one of those things, we need to protect the town." After a few minutes, I heard multiple doors being opened before my door was opened. A guy, no older than 25, with messy brown hair, came in with a flashlight and shined it brightly in my eyes. "Sam?" the guy asked. I got up and closely examined his face. "Cas?" I exclaimed. I quickly hugged him and said, "I am so happy to see you. What is happening? Why is the town holed up here?" I asked quickly before grabbing him to leave. "I'll fill you in later, but c'mon. I need to find my partner, Wendy." We walked down the hallway and quickly found Wendy still looking for me. "Wendy, I found the noise." Wendy came out of the room and inspected me for a moment before saying, "Who are you?" I looked at her, holding out a hand, and said, "My name is Samantha, but I prefer Sam. I'm one of Lucas' best friends." I'm no psychic, but clearly, Wendy did not like me and it was fairly evident that she liked Lucas. Wendy gave a disgusted look and said, "We need to go report her. How do we know she isn't one of them?" Lucas quickly defended me and shooting back at her. "I personally asked her to come, so stop being rude."

(I haven't written the rest but I wanted you guys to read it and see. This is my first like non fan fiction)
