Chapter Twenty-Seven

Feeling the warm inside air cacoon my skin as I shut the door behind me, I took a deep breath and headed towards the sound of my dad's voice as he spoke to Della.

As I walked into the living room, neither my dad or Della noticed my entrance, and my dad continued talking, "She knows she isn't supposed to leave without letting me know where she going..." He mumbled, running his hands through his hair, a habit he had when he was stressed.

"She most likely had a reason for leaving so suddenly," Della tried calming him. Feeling bad for causing my dad so much stress, I opened my mouth to say something when Della suddenly caught sight of me in the corner of her eye. Letting out a deep breath, Della stood to her feet quickly, and put her hands out to stop my dad from pacing, "She's here," Della mumbled softly, nodding her head in my direction.

Tucking a piece of my hair behind my ear, I watched as my dad turned around to face me. His face once expressing pure concern, washed over with relief as he let out a deep breath, "Where in god's name were you?" My dad exclaimed, his sudden anger causing me to flinch slightly.

Taking a deep breath, I shrugged, "I was out with a friend," I spoke softly, not able to meet my dad's gaze, and found myself trying to look at anything but him, although due to his heightened volume it made avoiding him quite difficult.

"And you didn't tell me this because?!" He all but shouted, throwing his hands up into the air in frustration. "How hard would have it been to come in the front door and tell me you were going somewhere with a friend?" He shouted, his anger not only evident in his words but also the expression that was spread across his face. It was as if he was scolding a child that ran away for a weeks time, instead of one that left for the afternoon.

Turning my attention away from my dad and towards Della, I watched as she grabbed tightly onto his hand and tried to calm him down, "Adam, she's home now that's all that matters," She spoke softly, lovingly. "Yelling at her isn't going to get the message across," She continued, running her free hand up his arm as she continued to work to calm him down.  "Express your words in a normal voice, alright?" She told him in a soft tone.
