Chapter 1: Variables
• Mikaila •
It's the second week of school, my sixth day in Third Year Highschool.
I straightened out my uniform which consisted of a light blue long sleeved button-up blouse with a folded down collar and sleeves and ruffles that parted down the center to make room for the thin fabric that served as a ribbon under a navy blue vest with three buttons and my school crest on the upper right corner, a long navy blue skirt, white knee-high socks, and blue flats. My wavy black hair was tied up into an acceptably messy ponytail with my bangs slanting across my forehead just enough to cover my forehead and not touch my eyebrows (which is school regulation for bangs).
Before I forget...
My name is Mikaila Carina A. Libera. I am a normal girl going to school at Sigma Academy. I've been attending at my school for eight years now and I like to think that I know the place like the back of my hand but it can still surprise me every now and then.
"Hey, sis!"
And speaking of surprises.
"Hey Luke..." I smiled at the Freshman who was about a head taller than me with black hair and brown eyes like mine.
His name is Lucas Jackson D. Uriah. We've known each other since I was in the Sixth Grade and he was in the Fourth Grade. We've been tight ever since. His group refers to me as his sister even though we aren't related. The cause of this being the fact that I look more like Luke than his older brother Charlie - a Second Year student - ever did. They never hesitated to rub it in whenever they saw Charlie.
His group includes a lot of the guys in the First Year - most of whom I have history with that does not involve Lucas himself - but there is always one guy that is always with him... Raphael Adamson H. Grayson.
I actually met Raphael during the Leadership Training Seminar in the Sixth Grade, back when my all time best friend and I still spoke to each other, but that's a different story...
I call him Raph - because that's what I've always called him - but it seems like now he goes by Adam so only I call him "Raph". I mentally rechecked if I had everything I needed in my black sling bag as well as all my homework while I approached the boys.
In the midst of all my thinking my mind froze, my eyes taking in the sight of my friends...
This time, it's not how tall they've grown that surprises me... It's that they have yet ANOTHER guy in tow.
'Who-? I have never met this guy in my life...' I thought as I exchanged glances with Luke whose eyes widened in realization.
"Oh! Right! Sis, meet my new friend... Jason" he smiled cheekily as he introduced the quiet boy standing in between him and Raph.
"Hi" we both said as we silently regarded one another. He was taller than the other boys in the First Year - Which was saying something - and had dark hair and eyes a strange shade of dark brown whereas mine and Luke's were more like hazel.
It was obvious that we were getting uncomfortable so I excused myself from the group and fled to the benches that my classmates have dubbed "The Third Year Hang-Out".
Before I left I caught Lucas warning Jason that most of the boys have to go to the inter-school games tomorrow so he might not have anyone to hang-out with...
I grinned and adjusted the strap of my bag.
I had time, the homework is at a lull, and I don't need to procrastinate.
"Jason Alexander K. Horatio" my friend, Kyla, said as she stood beside me, watching Jason watch Raph and Lucas converse.
"I'm in the same service as him, you know? I know where he lives... " She grinned, giving me a knowing smile.
I scowled at her as we headed up to the classroom.
"Oh, shut up."
