In the early days of the world there were two beings with immense power, the Lady of Life Freyja and the Count of Death Mortis. But back then death was not considered a bad thing, it was recognized as a part of life. So Freyja and Mortis coexisted in harmony, creating a magnificent forest full of magical beings and vegetation. When things got old and began to break down, Mortis took their souls to the Astral Realm. In replacement, Freyja would create new beings, imbuing personalities and using a palette of fantastic colors. But none of the creatures had the power to interact with the beings, and the two decided they would like other, less powerful immortal creatures to talk to. So they created humans of different skin and hair colors, and made them intelligent and immortal.

But the humans began to think they were greater than Freyja and Mortis, and forsook the ones that gave and took life. They rejected the two beings, and forgot about the 'gods' that created them. Freyja, the benevolent goddess, accepted their choice as a sign that they were growing, and let them live. But Mortis was very angry with the humans, and took their immortality from them. He was of mind to kill them all right then, but Freyja convinced him to give them lifespans of many years instead. However, in a rage, Mortis also introduced disease, injury, and sorrow as well, and banished humans from his forest. Freyja, filled with anguish at the vengeful being that her friend had become, was worried about his disillusioned state and worried that one day he might decide to terminate the humans once and for all. She understood that he had great power, and that over time he may one day overcome her in power. So, in a final act precaution, she imbued four humans with special power, locked in a birthmark on their arm. She made it so that it would be passed on through offspring, and that their names could not be changed. Mortis would have to slay these humans to even think about exterminating the race. And if he ever did try to exterminate the humans, the power within them would unlock and Freyja would be alerted. Maybe, together, they could subdue Mortis.

"Be safe, my Luminaries," she whispered, after giving the power away. She expected Mortis to act right away, but he slumbered for a millennium. After waking, he began to make for himself offspring, mating with the humans he hated. He only chose females of extraordinary character, but never loved them. Often times he would kill them when they tried to take their child back. He took the children and trained them, sending them out as agents to search for the Luminaries, that they might be killed. But he had no success, and another couple centuries passed. Lately, however, Freyja has begun to feel the threat of Mortis grow...
