The first thing Brenda sees when she opens her eyes is the overwhelming lights. However, after a couple of seconds it seems to dim, and it was then that she tries to adjust to her surroundings. Where am I? She thinks to herself while searching the room for something, anything, that was familiar to her. She sadly however, ends up with nothing. What she does notice is a boy asleep in the chair in the corner of the room. He has blonde hair that looks like it hasn't been combed in a couple of days, and also that the boys looks quite cute when he is sleeping. After she looks at him for a couple more seconds she realises that cause for his messy hair is probably due to the cavaliers white and red cap that is placed randomly next to him, and not just because he doesn't seem the need to do his hair when sleeping in a random girls room. Speaking of, she thinks to herself, why is he in her room?
Like the boy knew she was looking at him, he shuffles and slowly opens his eyes, his brain taking a moment or two to process the fact that she is awake before he jumps to his feet and crosses the room to be by her side in what feels like a heartbeat. The need to be by her side taking over everything other instinct in his body.
"Brenda? Brenda you're awake, hi, oh my— you're okay, you're awake, you're okay!" The boy rambles while he inspects her face for any sign of reaction. But he gets none.
"Who... Who are you?" Brenda replies slowly, a worried questioning tone in her voice.
"What?" The boy answers in return, his voice barely audible.
"Why are you in my room? Where even am I?" She replies, her worried tone changing to a confused one.
"You don't — you don't recognise me?" The boy adds, his voice now on the verge of cracking. Even though they aren't sat/laid ridiculously close, Brenda notices tears forming in his eyes as he looks at her with a pleading look in his eyes, he wants her to say that she is joking, wants to say that she recognises him, but she doesn't.
"No, should I? Do I know you? Have we even met before now?" The second the words leave Brenda's mouth the boy losses any resistance he has against the tears in his eyes and they leave his eyes, streaming down his face as he stands up from being beside her bed. Slowly, he mumbles the words she doesn't know me to himself over and over while his hands rub his face. Every time he says the words, he sounds more and more distraught over him, like the whole situation is becoming more and more realistic to him and honestly, he just can't handle it. He doesn't want the fact she doesn't recognise him to be true, he wants exactly the opposite. You can clearly tell he is trying to calm himself down, trying to stop the tears but no matter how hard he tries, he can't. They just keep coming, his emotions bubbling to surface in a flood he can't stop.
"Who are you exactly?" Brenda speaks after a couple of minutes of watching the boy cry, she feels bad for not recognising him but what else can she do? Just stand there and watch a stranger have a break down on her? Maybe he's here in what she believes to be a hospital for a specific reason, maybe he's delusional, she just doesn't know. After minutes of waiting for the boy to calm down, he finally stops his tears long enough to speak 5 words to Brenda, "I'm Nate, your best friend..."
