Chapter 24

Today is a big day.

It's his big day.

Today is the day he'll finally man up.

And he has never been so nervous.

He woke up at 5 am, two hours ahead of his alarm that he set at 7 am. He could not sleep properly as his mind is busy running with thoughts and scenarios of what might happen later. He prayed and wished last night that everything goes as they planned. And that hopefully, God help him, he'll get the result that he wants.

When his alarm went off an hour ago ago, he hurriedly bolted to his bathroom and bathed for 20 minutes - the fastest he's ever done in his entire life. And now, he is facing his full-length mirror, wearing the third outfit he's changed into. He is wearing a black pants, a white v-neck t-shirt, a blue jacket on top it, and a pair of black and yellow kicks. He stares at himself, gauging if he looks presentable enough. He twirls in front of the mirror, smirking at his reflection.

"You are such a woman." A voice suddenly says, surprising him. He turns and sees his sister standing in his doorway, watching him, amused.

"Bakit hindi ka kumakatok! I could have been naked, you little winx." He says, clutching his chest.

Valeen chuckles and eyes him from head to foot, a big grin plastered on her face. "You look handsome, brother." She says, giving him a thumbs up.

"Really?" RJ asks skeptically, looking at himself in the mirror again.

"Yes. Time to go. Jake is fuming downstairs. You're running late na daw." Val says with her funny Tagalog accent.

RJ walks towards his perfume cabinet and sprays his - and Maine's - favorite perfume all over his body, making Valeen cough. "OA, Jay." She covers her nose and leaves his room. RJ takes a last look on himself and winks at his reflection. He grabs his bag and walks down the stairs, feeling elated.

Calling

"Hello?"

"Girl! Dito na kami sa main gate niyo! Ayaw kaming papasukin." Ynna says in her usual high-pitched voice, not even bothering to say hello.

Maine laughs at her friend, who's always been so energetic, you'll wonder where she gets all of it. "Sabihin mo pangalan ko. Malakas ako sa mga guards." She says.

"I did na. Ayaw nilang maniwala." She says. Maine hears her talking to the guard, telling him that she's in phone with Maine Mendoza.

"Sige, wait lang. May kukunin lang ako and then sunduin ko na kayo." She says. Ynna excitedly says okay, telling Maine she loves her and she's the best person in the world before hanging up. Maine shakes her head in amusement. She is heading outside the gym when she spotted Patricia coming in. Maine runs towards her friend, dragging her with her.

"Hello to you, too." Pat says. She adjusts the strap of her duffel bag, pulling her hand from hers. "Where we going?" Pat hooks her arm with Maine's.

"Sa gate. Susunduin natin 'yung mga teammates ko sa camp." Maine answers. "How's your practice?"

"As usual, draining. Buti nga maaga akong dinismiss ngayon e. Manonood din daw kasi ng coach si Buddha." She says, pertaining to her coach.

"Ikaw? Kailangan malalaman 'yung sa captainship?" Pat asks.

"I don't know, actually. But usually kasi before the start of the new season, may announcement na. So matagal tagal pa." Maine explains.

"Good luck!!!" Pat releases her arm and hugs her, squeezing her. Maine laughs at her gesture and pats her arm. "Sino pala kalaban ng men's?" She asks.
