Today's the day: my very first day of high school. I'm so nervous. It's bad enough that I'm starting at a new building but it's even worse when I moved over the summer so now I don't know anyone. I'm going to be so alone.
I slowly walk up the front steps to the school building when suddenly I hear a loud ringing coming from the school. I jump back, startled, when suddenly a group of boys sulk inside. One of them pauses right next to me, barely glances in my direction, and then whips around, tossing his cigarette into the lawn. I catch a whiff of alcohol on him as he walks past me into the building. He seems hungover, but with sunglasses on, you can't really tell.
I shrug off the boy's stare and just walk inside. The hallways are clear and the gang of boys have vanished. I wander around temporarily, and them walk into a room that reads 'office'. Approaching the front desk, I nervously clear my throat and stand around awkwardly.
"Can I help you?" A lady asks me as she approaches the desk.
"H-hi. Um....my names's Eleanor Calder and I'm new here-"
"Hold it right there-" she quickly interrupts me.
How rude.....
She begins typing words into the computer in front of her and then turns around, grabbing a paper from the printer.
"Here's your schedule," she smiles.
"Thank you."
I take the paper, examining it, and begin to proceed out of the office. By the size of this school, it's gonna take me a long time to find my way around here. Please don't let my first class be far from here.
"Now class, we have a new student coming in and I expect you to be nice to her, alright?" I hear a teacher lecture down the hall.
Maybe they'll be able to give me some directions as to where I'm going. I walk inside and immediately get stared at up and down by fellow students giving me the death stare.
"Well hello to you people too," I mutter under my breath.
"Can I help you Miss?" The teacher asks as she approaches me.
"Yes I'm lost and would like to know where I have to go," I explain as I hand her my schedule.
It doesn't even take her a minute to look at the schedule to figure out where I am.
"Yes, you're here. Hello Eleanor. Take a seat right over there," she points.
I check out where I am exactly before walking over to my seat. I look back to notice that the boy from earlier sits front of me. I can recognize the face, the tattoos, the piercings, especially the smell of cigarettes I recognize as I walk past him to take my seat. I avoid eye contact, but I can feel his eyes locked on me. I sit down to see his eyes checking me out up and down, obviously stopping at my boobs.
"Louis you're such a pervert," a girl states.
"Shut the fuck up Hannah," Louis snaps.
So that's the guy's name. He doesn't appear to me to be a Louis, but I guess I was wrong.
"Don't tell me what to do. I'm just trying to be nice-"
"Well niceness doesn't get anybody anywhere in this town now does it?!?" Louis argues.
"That's enough," the teacher glares, "Louis, you can pack your things and head to Mr. Storm's office."
Louis' face boils red with anger, and unexpectedly, he stands up and flips his desk over, the vibration shaking throughout the room. The next sound we all hear is the sound of the door slamming shut. Silence fills the room as the teacher picks up the desk and chair. A few minutes later, the bell rings and the class files out in a single file line.
"Eleanor!" I hear a voice call from behind.
I begin to turn around but then I see Hannah's familiar face beside mine, already caught up to me.
"I'm sorry about Louis. He's a piece of work. But when you get to know him, you find out how truly special he really is. He's just had a really rough past, that's all. Don't judge him."
"Are you his sister?" I ask, although I regret asking afterwards because it sounds stupid.
"No. Actually, I'm his girlfriend. Well, his ex-girlfriend. We broke up over the summer. But we're still friends. Obviously, we kind of have to be friends because I know so much about him. He'd kill me if I told anyone the things I know about him."
"Oh," is all I manage to say because I can't really think of anything else to say for this kind of situation.
"Anyway," Hannah shakes her head, changing the subject, "what's your next class?"
"Oh, um......" I pause to check my schedule, "Spanish."
"Oh......." Hannah pauses, almost seeming a bit worried.
"What?" I ask, feeling as though I'm missing out on something.
"N-nothing. It's a shame. I have German."
"Oh," I nod.
"Yeah. Well, I better go. I'll catch up with you later."
"Alright," I smile, "see ya."
A few minutes pass. I just barely make it to the next room in time for the bell to ring. I walk in, almost as though I've entered a new universe, and stand around like a martian. Why is everyone staring at me? Do I have something in my teeth?!? I quickly pull out my phone and activate the front camera, checking my appearance.
"I understand that you're new here," the male teacher mumbles, "but we have a strict no phone policy. Next time I see it, it's mine. Understood?"
I nod, unable to speak any words because of the ginormous lump in my throat preventing me from speaking. I haven't even been in here five minutes and we already hate each other. What a great way to start the school year.......
"W-where do I sit?" I stutter, feeling like a complete idiot for not being able to speak properly.
"Table over there. Seat closest to the aisle," he points, "my name's Mr. Tanner if you have any further questions. You're table-mate should be able to help catch you up with everything that's been discussed so far."
I quickly glance to the left to look at my table where I shall sit, but the window seat's empty. I wonder who my neighbor will be. Mr. Tanner allows me to take my seat and begins taking roll call. As he's taking roll call, he pauses suddenly, almost sweating over the nervousness of the name, but skips over it, moving on.
"Alright call, settle down. Let's get started with-" Mr. Tanner begins, but quickly stops when the sound of the classroom door opening fills the room.
Everyone's head sway to the right towards the door, looking at the face. I can't tell who it is because a human giraffee is blocking my view, but I shrug it off and just begin writing the assignment on the board in my notebook. I hear the footsteps coming closer, but the noise doesn't phase me.
"You're late," Mr. Tanner scolds.
"Whatever," I barely hear him mumble.
I continue writing until I glance up to see a groin in my view. I quickly avert my eyes because that is certainly not something that I would like to stare at. I look up, only to nearly choke on my minty gum when I catch a glimpse of his face.
"So," he pauses and smirks, "you're my seat partner."
I stiffen in my seat and scooch closer to the end of the table to be as far away from that thing as possible.
How the hell am I going to survive sitting next to him an entire year?!?
