It had been a long journey, but Nick and his group had finally pulled through. Finally, after escaping both Ross and Red, they began returning back to the CDC, bringing their new friend Max along with them of course. As they made their way back, Nick idly walked along. Max was skipping alongside with his meat cleaver in hand, stained with blood. Cory's blood. Nick stared at it. The smell of the blood was still strong, and he couldn't get it out of his senses.
"Is somethin' bothering ya, pal?" Bobby spoke up, who had been watching Nick closely. Nick quickly looked up.
"Oh, Bobby... I just... I've been overthinking."
"Is that so? Well, surely there ain't much t' be worryin' about for a while now. I mean, Red and-"
"It's not about that. It's just..." Nick decided to lower his voice. "Cory was Uni's best friend. I'm going to go easy on him while telling the news, but I don't know how well he's going to take it. I'm worried, Bobby."
"Well, Nick, I don't think there is anythin' we can do there," Bobby said, also lowering his voice. "Uni has to know the news, sometime or another." Bobby sighed and shook his head. "Jus' try not t' worry too much. He'll be fine."
"I guess you're right... ", Nick said in a mutter, glancing over at Max. "I wont tell him who did it. He'll end up asking too many questions, and we'd have to explain everything...." He sighed, looking down at his feet. "I want everyone to be happy, Bobby. Including Uni."
"It'll pass over soon, Nick. Soon enough, Uni'll forget about it. He'll forgive ya," Bobby gave a reassuring smile, but Nick didn't smile back. There was too much on his mind to even think about smiling.
"Oooh look! This is the perfect log to build a chair with!" Max suddenly exclaimed, happily pointing over at a fallen down tree. He skipped over to it, examining it carefully as if it was an important piece of art. "Hey, Nick, Come help me cut some of this off!"
Nick looked up, before saying, "Max, hold on, I need to talk to you first."
"What? Oh, why? Is it about the Uno game? Cause I know I beat you fair and square at that-"
"Actually, its about something else..." He sighed quietly and glanced back at the rest of the group. "You guys can continue walking. We'll find our way back."
As the other group left to get back to the base, Nick walked alone with Max.
"Max.... I... I need to talk to you about the other day.. Where you, y'know, kind of killed Cory.."
"Hm? What was that? Sorry, wasn't listening. Hey, is that a bluebird?"
"Please, pay attention. You cant mention anything to Uni about it when we get back, it's very important that I tell him what-"
"Walkers!" The madman happily pointed out, skipping up to the two walkers approaching and waving happily. They walked right past them and towards Nick who pulled his gun out. Bang bang! Dead. Max pouted and crouched down to them. "My friends.."
"I said, pay attention. You cant mention anything to Uni about Cory's death. It's gonna be hard enough telling him that he died in the first place. Please.... Please, just don't mention it to him."
"Hmmmm...." Max stroked his beard in thought. "...Fiiine, but - but, just because I won at Uno, okay?"
Nick let out a sigh of relief. "Thank you Max. Its appreciated. I just don't want Uni to ask too many questions about it. And I don't want him to be upset with you, I mean, he doesn't even know who you are-"
