He still loves her. No matter how many times he tells you he hates her, he still loves her. Even though she hurt him, deep down he's still in love with her.
You can see it in his eyes, when she's around. The way he tenses up, or gets angry when you bring her up or ask about her. You don't think he's even aware of it himself. But he does it nonetheless. You pretend you don't see it, and don't dare mention it, for the sake of your relationship with him.
You sometimes question if you really love him, or if you just like the attention he gives you. You push it away and deny ever thinking about it, because you do love him, and you can't ever think about him not loving you in return.
And you never acknowledge the fact he still loves her. It crushes you, but you decide to leave well enough alone.
