"Hey, just wanted to check up on you, see how things are going. Haven't spoken in a while. Thinking about you always. Love and miss you. This is Jasper, call me back."
I watched as Jas ended the call with pinched eyebrows before turning to me. "Everything alright?" I asked casually, sliding off the hood of the old Chevy and moving back to the passenger side door. "Yeah, just wanted to check up on an old friend, nothing to worry 'bout." He smile at me gently, and limbered into the truck.
I've noticed he's been a bit off recently. Distant, almost. Second time since we left town he's called this "old friend," and it went to voicemail each time. Odd. No matter, I climbed back into the cab of the truck anyway, and buckled up as Jas coaxed the old girl to life once more.
I flipped on the local rock station, kicked my bare feet on the dusty dash, and watched the sun settle down below the Arizonan horizon in the rearview mirror. One more day, one more town, and one more mile between the past and us. It's about time we went home.
