GREENWICH VILLAGE, NEW YORK
ABIGAIL ADAMS HIGH SCHOOL
8:32 A.M.

She sauntered down the halls, her blonde ponytail bouncing up and down as she did. As she crusaded down the hall of lockers of Abigail Adams High School, her eyes wandered onto a girl who was smiling and laughing with Lucas Friar.

Maya Hart's eyes fixated on the bubbly Riley Matthews, the brunette barely even noticing the blonde staring at her through her sunglasses. Maya walked over to Riley and tapped her shoulder.

Riley Matthews turned around, her hair almost touching Maya Hart's nose, and she smiled that innocent smile Maya always loved.

"Hi Maya!" The girl cheered, waving a hand that was free from her books. Maya took her sunglasses off and shoved them on the collar of her white My Chemical Romance blouse she got for her 16th birthday.

"Hey, Riles," Maya replied with a side smile. She tilted her petite frame to the side to see Lucas Friar, Riley's boyfriend. "Huckleberry," she nodded, he waved.

"Hey, short stack," he greeted her. Maya rolled her eyes at the nickname. She used to absolutely adore Lucas, but when she found out he was dating Riley, she despised him with all she had.

She could never be mad at Riley, though. She was her sunshine and Maya was her peaches.

"So, Maya, are you going to prom?" Riley asked, leaning against her top locker as Lucas' hands snaked around her waist. It made Maya slightly want to gag, but, she didn't. She couldn't. Not in front of her. So, instead, Maya shook her head.

"Nope," she simply replied with confidence and pride, standing on her tip toes to make it seem like she's the bigger one here. But really, she's not. She's just a... short stack of pancakes. "Sweetheart, you know me, don't you? I don't do prom."

Lucas scoffed, putting his chin on Riley's shoulder, as if he were mocking her or something. Lucas was the only person who knew about Maya's secret feelings for Riley. He used it to his advantage sometimes, but he knew Riley.

Although Riley may be a big supporter of woman rights, she would never date a girl. She's at straight as a wooden board.

"Prom is like, the biggest dance of the year, Maya," Riley told her best friend, resting her head on top of Lucas'. Maya so badly wanted to roll her eyes and slap him right across the face, but she couldn't do that in front of her sunshine. "You have to go, peaches. Please?"

Maya stared. She just stared at Riley, blankly. Maya wanted with all her heart to be with Riley, but then again, it would ruin both their friendships.

And possibly Riley's popular reputation for the whole entire school year. Maya just yearned for Riley.

Sometimes she would admire her from afar, sometimes she would sit right in front of her bay window as Riley would sing to her stereo. She would examine how her eyebrows knit together whenever she thinks, how Riley would just stare with a saddened look on her face if she would cry, no sobs or anything coming out of her mouth.

It's kind of stalkerish, but Maya is her best friend. Riley would understand if she caught her staring.

But no, Riley didn't know anything. The stares Maya would give her were stares that Lucas had never even gave her.

Stares full of love, passion, yearning, lust, even. She could stare at her for hours, pointing out all her flaws and calling them beautiful.

She wanted to kiss her on the lips until they were drunk in each other's taste, she wanted to massage her back whenever Riley would feel strained, she wanted to hug her and stroke her hair on her bed every night until they fall asleep. She wanted to watch the stars with her and that's where they'll say "I love you" for the first time, Maya so badly wanted Riley to be hers and hers only.

Not fuckboy Friar.

But then, to ruin the moment, the loud bell rang through their ears like a siren. Since the bell was right above that certain wall of lockers, it was especially loud for the three of them. Maya, Riley, and Lucas all held their ears and grumbled at the loud sound before it faded away slowly.

Lucas grabbed Riley's chin to make her look at him and he gave her a somewhat passionate kiss on the lips.

"I'll see you in history, princess," Lucas muttered to a Riley as she smiled, enveloping him into another kiss. This time, it was sweet and quick.

Maya rolled her eyes, looking at the two in disgust. Riley couldn't see, so that was her opportunity to show whatever expression she was feeling to Lucas and releasing her jealous aura to anyone who happened to walk by.

The couple finally pulled away, Lucas smiling one last time before turning around, winking at Maya in the process, and finally walking away from them.

Riley sighed happily and looked at Maya who was standing there with a slightly fake smile on. Riley was the queen of smiles, so she automatically knew something was wrong with her best friend.

"Maya? What's wrong?" Riley asked, furrowing her thick eyebrows in confusion.

Maya stayed silent, looking at the tiled ground; polished enough for Maya to see her reflection - soft, golden locks, bright blue eyes, a fair complexion, and a punk aura of clothing covering her body. "Peaches?"

Maya shook her head, snapping out of it, and looked up at Riley. She smiled and said, "Oh, yeah uh, I'll see you in class later, Riles. Bye," she said and walked off, seeming to ignore Riley's question.

The brunette stood there in the empty halls, wondering why Maya acted all bummed out all of a sudden. The only sound she heard was the clicking of Maya's leather boots walking away from her echoing through the halls of Abigail Adams High School.

Riley always looked up to Maya; she was her inspiration to keep smiling. Maya was the bestest friend a girl could ask for.

She was there whenever Riley needed her, whenever she was feeling down, whenever she was sick. Maya always held her hair back whenever she puked in the toilet from the stomach flu, Maya always helped her with her art projects, Maya had been there with her every step of the way.

And now, today, she felt as though Maya was uncomfortable around her. Queasy. It was almost painful to see her peaches act like that. She was clueless, and only Maya and Lucas knew. Little did she know that something big is gonna happen to her, and it's going to change her life forever. Along with Maya's.
