What now?

I sat on my bed and stared out the window. It had been a few days since the attack at the gates. We still had no idea why they acted like that or if they'll ever return to normal. The mayor had given Steve and I the day off from guard duty, and Autumn was training on the grounds with John. Well, I guess I could take a patrol today, if the mayor will let me. He seems to do his best to keep me in the town. I stood and walked out of my room. Steve had gone somewhere so I was here alone. I walked to the fridge and grabbed some stake. I walked over to the table and sat down to eat.

Moments later, I heard someone running to the door. I stood and opened it to see Sophie and Lily with Steve. "Hero!" The two girls shouted. I crouched to their hight and they jumped on me knocking me to the floor.

"Hey girls, what brings you here?" I asked hugging them.

"Steve said we could come over and play today!" Sophie exclaimed.

"Did he now?" They both nodded and got off of me. I stood up and walked to the table. "So, what do you want to do?"

"I want to learn how to fight like you and Steve do." Lily said.

"So do I!" Sophie declaired.

I looked to Steve. "I don't know about all that." He said.

"Please, Steve, we're sick of hiding when the monsters attack." Sophie begged.

"I think Steve's right. You're a little young to be learning how to fight." The girls looked disappointed, I sighed. "If you ask your parents and they give the ok, then next time you come over we will teach you two how to fight. Ok?" They smiled and nodded.

"Ok, so how about we play a game?" Steve asked.

"Yah!" They played with us for a few hours and we brought them home. "Why do we always have to go home so soon?"

"What are you talking about Sophie? You two have been here for hours." Steve said with a smile.

"Really, it seems like only two minutes." Lilly muttered.

I looked at the two of them, they seemed reluctant to get home. "What's wrong? You two don't seem to want to go home."

They stopped and so did we. "Remember the four men who attacked you two?" Sophie started. We nodded and kneeled in front of them.

"Well, one of them was, was our dad.....before that night, he and mom got into a fight. About what we don't know, but he left and didn't come back. Then the other day, we saw the guards dragging him to the hospital, unconscious." Lilly finished tears filling both their eyes.

Steve and I stayed quiet, not knowing what to say. "Come on girls, let's get you home." We stood and they followed us to their house. We said our good-byes and walked away. "Hero, what are we gonna do now? I can't keep hearing about those men without knowing we can help."

"I don't know Steve, I just don't know."I thought for a moment. "Hey I'm gonna head to the grounds to see how Autumn is doing with training."

"Ok, can you see how John is doing?" I nodded and went to the training grounds.

"Hero! I think I finally figured out how to keep my balance properly!" Autumn said proudly as I walked up.

"Good. Show me." I stood across from her and John stopped me.

"Sir, you don't have a weapon to defend yourself."

"I know John. Now Autumn, show me what you've been doing the past few days." She raised her sword and charged. I barely had enough time to dodge her. I attempted to disarm her, but came to no success. She swung at me and sliced my arm. I grabbed it and she stopped. "Very good! At this rate, you'll be a guard by next month." I said.
