A girl is standing in distance away from a group of teenagers who are having a close conversation within their group. This part of the courtyard is occupied by students in the same department. Jealousy is reflected in her eyes. You can see her moving a seat close or acting like she's standing up to get attention. But she settled in taking out her notebook and writing instead.
Without anyone else knowing, an eye is spying on her. A boy is sitting three benches from the girl and its been three days that he is curiously looking at her. She saw the girl talking to herself again with the slightest movement of her mouth; she offers handshake midair then give an uncomfortable smile. He saw that after that little practice, she finally made up her mind, she pack her things and she stood up to face the direction of the group.
He cannot take his eyes off her in anticipation that she finally had courage. In the back of his mind, he's rooting for her. She walks towards the group to approach them. As the distance grew smaller and she's only a few steps away from their benches, she stop on her path, hesitated and at the end decided to pass by the group and walk away.
He was disappointed to look at her not knowing that the girl was more disappointed with herself.
Today, the same guy is sitting on the long benches. He was actually bored and trying hard to entertain himself by watching the different students passing by. Then again, he saw the lone girl walking in a hallway holding her notebook. As she entered the courtyard, she stops in her footsteps seeing four girls chatting happily in the nearest shaded green table. She noticed that the table beside them is empty. She clenches her fist to get courage; holding her notebook tightly as she marches forward and sits on the other table near those girls. He saw a slight curve of happiness in her lips. That little act must have been an accomplishment for her. He chuckled in a low voice amused by her. He saw her opened her notebook and started writing while smiling.
She was actually writing a story but changes her mind and start thinking of another plot. She tap her fingers as she can't think of anything. She paused when she noticed that the girls started to leave. As she sighs, she finally noticed the boy seating on the black benches. Their eyes met each other but that ended when the boy take a sip of his juice.
She keeps staring at him and he can feel her stare so he restrains his self from looking at her to avoid suspicion. She closed her notebook and carries it.
She started walking towards him, the steps are getting nearer and he can hear them by the sound of her 2 inches black shoes- he wait in anticipation that the girl have decided to approach him but the sound of the footsteps stop. It reminded him how this girl always back out in the end. He slip a hand on his pocket to get his cell phone and from the screen, he uses it a mirror to check on the girl behind him. She is standing their twiddling her thumbs while looking down the floor. Then she saw her turn around decided to leave instead. By reflexes, he turn around to her direction, stood up and took a step to caught her arm as he stop her from leaving. The girl jerked as he turned to the boy. There is at least three seconds that they stare with each other before the boy opened his mouth to break that silence.
"Is there something I can do for you?" asked the boy feeling a little awkward withdrawing his hand from holding her.
Embarrass and flustered, she doesn't know what to say.
"Ah-I'm a friend!" She stuttered and dribbled those words out from her mouth. Even she was surprised to hear those words came out from her mouth. What she wanted to say was 'Maybe you want a friend'. But she exhales embarrassment instead and ended up running away without a word. The boy was left hanging in the air as he watch her run disappearing in distance.
There was hesitation in her the next day remembering what she did. She was walking to the courtyard when she saw the back of the boy seating on the black tables. Looking at him, she knew it's the same boy sitting on the same place again. She started questioning, was he always been there? Did she notice her? Unconsciously, she was walking towards the table he is sitting. While walking, she's staring at his back but was taken when the boy turned to her that made her stop on her tracks. There are seconds they stare at each other. She was surprise that she freezes while the boy was just looking at her waiting in response.
"What?" the boy break the silence and he saw the girl was startled taking a few steps backwards.
"Are you going to run away again?" the boy asked standing from his seat not taking his eyes away from her so she freeze again.
Silence continuous. The boy look at the girl like she's some statue not moving. He sighs and took his seat turning his back from the girl. He sip his juice in silent.
A few more silence takes place. He's listening to the movement of the girl guessing that she may run away again. But to his surprise, the girl end up sitting beside him on the same table. He couldn't help himself as she turn to his left to look at the girl settling down.
"What was that you said yesterday?" She asks in a low voice as she takes out her notebook and started writing to have an excuse not to look at him.
"Takumi. That's my name." she can visualize a curve of smile on his lips as he introduces his self.
"I'm... Shiyo." She replied slightly turning to his side.
"So, want to be friends?" without hesitation, he offers catching her attention which made her turn to his side to meet his eyes.
"Really?" he can see the lights in her eyes glowing with that question. He couldn't help it and he chuchles.
"Silly, I'm the one who's asking you." He tries hard to keep his laughter.
"Ah-sorry...Of course." She stutters that ended with a smile afterwards. Then she felt embarrassed that she looks down to avoid his eyes.
"Mind telling me now what was that you said yesterday?" he started as he put his hand on the table catching his chin while trying to get her attention once more.
That reminded her of what she said and made her embarrassed even more.
"T-That was-" she can't help stuttering working her explanation. "I was going to ask you to be my friend but I'm was so nervous that's why it came out like that, sorry." She apologizes with an uncertain smile.
"Why don't you get along with those girls?" he asked pointing on the girls on the other side of the tables. She look at their direction.
"They don't like you?" he guessed trying to get a word from her.
"No!" She answered that quickly.
"It's me. I'm actually a boring person and hard to get along with. I was trying my best, but I think it's still no good. I always freeze when I'm nervous after all hehe." She's half joking and he can see the little sadness from her eyes.
"But if I can, I really want to be friends with everyone." She added.
"Want me to help you?" He volunteered.
"Really?" it's like déjà vu the way she said that again. She smiled in anticipation on his help but in a split second hesitated, then she turn in to silence, then avoided his eyes in embarrassment. "Thank you." Her voice is low, almost sounds like a whisper. He smiled staring at her thinking; she's really a lot of things. How can she give different expressions in just a single moment?
