"Now," Alby begins, "go meet everyone then wash up for dinner. And stay out of trouble, no going into the.. Doors." He says and walks away. Why is everyone so secretive?

I turn around and the glade. "Hey, I'm Chuck." I look to my side and see a small boy, looking around 12 years old looking up at me. I smile. "Hey there."

"I feel ya." He says and I giggle for the first time in a while. "I've only been here for around a month, I came right before you." I nod and fold my arms. I feel like I can trust him. He sits down on a wooden log, and I sit next to him. "Ask all the questions you've got, greenie. I know how confusing everything is."

"First of all," I begin- and laugh at how instant I replied. What's out there?" I ask.

He sighs and let's his hands fall to his sides. "It's the maze. And no one goes out there."

As he says that- 3 boys run in from the south door, which is where we're facing. I raise my eyebrow and look at Chuck.

"Those are the runners. You see we all have jobs here. From pulling weeds to chopin up animals. But they're the only ones aloud out there, so don't think about it. Unless you become a runner." He squints and holds his hands together, leaning his elbows on his knees.

"So why are they out there if it's so 'scary?'" He laughs and shakes his head. "You really are curious about the maze aren't ya?"

"The maze??"

"Welp, looks like I just spilled the secret. Yeah,  there's a maze out there. those runners spend all day running around trying to find clues or something that will get us out of here."

"Wait." I ask and narrow my eyebrows. "Why are we trying to escape?"

He throws his head back and groans. "Look, we don't know. Just bad things have happened here and we need to leave one point or another. Can't live here with the grievers no more."

Grievers..? Is that what's in the maze? Before I ask, a gust of wind blows over the glade, about knocking me over. Leaves attack me and I shield my face with my hands. A loud grumbling sound takes over. Another surprise?

I thought I was just dizzy at first, but I'm sure that the doors were closing. Over 50 feet tall, stone walls that look as old as dirt, are moving.

Chuck makes his way over to everyone, and I follow him. Standing next to him, we watch the doors close. First north, then west, then south and east.

I look up and catch Newt looking at me. He raises his eyebrows and limps over to me. My heart races. What's going on with me? "Exciting, isn't it?" He asks, looking up at the sky. God he's beautiful.

I laugh, but sit there silent not being able to think of anything to say. His voice is English and beautiful. Smooth and soft. I feel a wave of comfort as he stands next to me.

"Name come back yet?" He asks and looks at me. He starts walking towards the homestead, and everyone else does as well.

I shake my head. "Nothing has."

He nods and pats my back. His touch feels electric and it gives me butterflies. Oh boy.

Walking to the homestead, the gentle wind blows through my hair and Newt walks beside me. I have to walk a little slower for him to keep up with me because of his limp, but I don't mind. For the first time in a while I feel a bit peaceful.
