Chapter 32- Lights Out All Out

Annie’s POV

I wasn’t angry. That wasn’t the right word. I was more confused than angry. The lift doors opened and I walked through the nearly empty foyer, past the leather chairs arranged around a glass coffee table with a variety of magazines scattered across the top, past the reception desk with a little man in a smart uniform sat and to the glass front doors which was opened by a doorman who I nodded to on the way out.

As I stepped outside it began to rain. I watched amused as all the men and women walking along the street opened bags and briefcases and seemed to all put up identical black umbrellas in unison. Instantly the pavement grew more crowded as the umbrellas pushed people around, one woman knocked into me quite hard as she walked past, her red umbrella standing out amongst the crowd. Muttering my apologies to the passers by, as I walked through them to get to the road, I eventually climbed into the passenger seat of my dad’s black Audi. The journey went rather uneventfully as I sat in a weir daze gazing out the window, watching the clouds darken and the rain increase, not really looking at anything in particular. Just sitting there. Watching.

Ed's POV

What had just happened? My head span in a whirl and I sat down heavily on the sofa. I re read the message. Who was this girl and why did she feel the need to meddle with my relationship? I lay down on the sofa and clutched a pillow to my chest. I warm, sweet scent filed my nose. Annie. However as I closed my eyes it wasn’t Annie I saw it was off a murky balcony and bedroom. I watched as two people staggered into a bedroom and sat down on the bed. The man had ginger hair and the girl blonde. My eyes snapped open and I jerked my head up. What was that noise? I got up tentatively and edged round the flat, checking the rooms. There it was again. My ears seemed to prick at the sound and I felt my cheeks burn and my palms go sweaty. I walked past the lift and past a red umbrella on the floor. Annie must have left hers here. I turned into the kitchen and suddenly I plummeted into darkness.

“Hello” I tried to call out, but no noise came out. I backed up against the wall searching for the light switch. I felt the cold touch of the wall and slapped my hand around searching for the light switch. My heart was beating faster now and all the hairs on my arm and back of the neck stood on end. Where was this switch?! More frantically now I etched along the wall of the kitchen, slamming into the appliances and the kitchen island, searching for the switch. I never had liked the dark and as my hand traced the wall films from horror scenes flashed before my eyes and I waited for someone to grab me or to hear the trigger of a gun.

Light. Finally. I heaved a sigh of relief and grasped the switch for support, my knees shaking. I turned and walked into something, or someone, and I felt a sudden surge of heat in my head and then it all went black.
