Chapter 1
“No!” the scream was ripped out of my foster mother’s throat. I was immobilized as they barged into to the house and took everything in sight. The part that was absolutely terrifying, was how they didn’t move a muscle. All the items they wanted floated towards them like they were magnets. I was hypnotized. They hairs on my arms stood stiff like army men at attention. I broke out of my trance when I saw the biggest man start to walk towards Emily, Selia’s actual daughter. His huge nose crooked severely towards the left, and his lazy eye settled on each and every one of us. The other eye was covered by a long, deep scar that after all this time was still red. The iris and pupil were barely visible; it was just a slit, like a cat’s eye and almost seemed to be a part of the scar.
He stopped right in front of Emily and as he reached out a hand to touch her, I whimpered. Aaron pushed me behind him, but the man had already started walking towards us. As he got closer, I could see all the bumps on his hands and the dirt and grime underneath his nails. Before he could reach us though, Selia screamed at him. He twitched his head and started heading towards her and away from us. Emily, who was eighteen, brought both of us closer and told us to run. She shoved both of us and screamed as she ran more into the house to lead him away from us.
We did as she told us and ran out the front door. I heard heavy thumps and looked behind us. One of the other men was chasing us. My legs burned as I tried to push myself harder but to no avail. They man reached Aaron first, and lifted him by his hair. I could see the tears making it’s way down Aaron’s face as chunks of hair were pulled out of his head, highlighting his golden blond hair red. I knew I could do something, but I didn’t know what I was supposed to do. I heard Aaron scream as he was pushed into the cement, loosening some of his front teeth. I felt an overwhelming need to help him, so I did. I suddenly felt power flood through me and with it came the satisfying feeling that I was in control. I pointed my hands towards the man, letting the feeling wash over me and into him. I watched as he was jerked away from my brother. Aaron stayed where he was but lifted his head to me. The man started to spasm though and my attention was pulled back to him. I watched as his bulging eyes came towards me in shock and confusion. He was no longer worried about that in the next instant, because soon he scratched his hands around his throat as his face turned an ugly shade of purple. In my power driven moment, I thought that the color suited him. It wasn’t until much later, after I killed him that I realized that the feeling was the darkness taking over.
I woke up from my dream to the sun blinding my eyes seeing as I left the blinds up last night. I can never decide if I like waking up early or not though. I mean, it has its pros and cons, but so does everything else. I was just starting to open my eyes when I suddenly heard a crash from my right. I stuck my hand out and swung it backwards and was satisfied when I heard an undignified thump.
“Gosh, dammit Ryna!” I heard. The voice stopped me midway from another assault. I slowly turned around and glared at my brother.
“Well, if you don’t want to get hit in the balls, don’t go around scaring half-awake girls,” I huffed.
“I didn’t mean to startle you. I was just gonna wake you so we could get some training done before school. Not my fault you left your cup on the edge of your desk.” He had both his hands up, as if wary of if I was going to strike again. I wished my brother were always like this. Ever since that, he’s been focused on nothing but me. He could be a really sweet guy if he tried. I mean, not that he was mean the rest of the time, but he was stiff, I guess. He didn’t allow for any fun, everything was serious. Then again, he has kept us alive for the past six years, so I guess I can’t complain.
