"Detective, we got a call about a break in on Emerly Street. "
"Tell the captain that we're on our way," I turn to the desk beside me, " you ready partner?"
He turns towards me, "Ready when you are." he smiles.
I crack a smile, "I'm driving this time," I say as I swing my jacket around my shoulders, pulling it over my holster.
"Lets go man!" He says over his shoulder as he makes his way toward the station's front doors.
"Will! Thomas!" One of the officers runs up to us, "Sorry--Detectives--there's a reporter here to see you, they want to interview you about your last case."
"We have to respond to a break in, tell them to call back later."
"Will do." he turns around and jogs into the conference room.

I push the door open, holding my gun in front of me. I move quickly through the hallway, turning sharply in the doorway of the first room. I scan it quickly, a desk has been placed in the left hand corner, with a long bookshelf sprawled against the back wall. A small window lets light in from the street. I move back into the hall, Tom is making his way out of a room a little farther along.
"Clear." I whisper
He nods, and we continue along. We've just reached the edge of the staircase when a thud comes from the next level. We make eye contact and I move up the stairs slowly, as Tom continues up behind me a little ways. Once we reach the top of the stairs we continue on into a hallway the same size as the one downstairs.
At the end there is a door that has been propped open, causing light to cascade into the hallway. I signal back to Tom and he moves to the other side of the hallway. He nods once and the we continue down.
As we move closer to the door I start hearing quiet talking. Someone is in the room. We reach the door, and I move through it and over a bit letting Tom come in behind me and take a position to my left. The person is squatting in front of a safe, a black hoodie thrown over their head. A few books lay around their feet, pushed off the bookshelf in front of them, most likely the cause of the noise.
"Freeze! Put your hands in the air!" I holler.
They tense, then drop a small screwdriver and pliers onto the ground with a soft thud. Small gloved hands move above their head and they slowly rise from the ground.
"Stop right there!" Tom calls out
They stop in a half crouching position as Tom moves closer. He puts his gun back in his holster, and then reaches behind him and pulls out his handcuffs. I steady my gun, and move a few steps closer as Tom brings their hands together behind their back and raises them all the way off the ground. As he begins reading them their rights, I pull my radio up to my mouth, and begin to call in.
"This is Detective Andrews, calling in an Assignment Completion, over."
"Message received Detective Andrews. Return to station, over." The radio croaks out
"Copy."
I clip my radio back onto my waist, and push my gun back into my halter.
I move back from the door, as Tom brings the the man over. He's taken their hood off, and as he moves them closer I realize that it's not a man at all, but a girl, a young one too. Wait.
"Macey?"

We got back to the station and lead Macey into the interrogation room. Tom left to fill out the report. That was five minutes ago. I've been staring at her through the one way glass, as she took in the compact room, pulling on the handcuffs binding her to the table.
What has it been, 12 years since I last saw her. Summer break before my junior year, I was living with my dad after my parent's separation, and she was living with her grandfather, who lived across the street. My dad wasn't home often, and her grandfather decided to look after me. I wasn't the best person before I met her, and I probably wasn't the best influence for her, but her and her grandfather are the reason I was able to turn myself around and get to the place in my career that I am now.
What could have changed her? I lean against the wall, close my eyes, and let out a long sigh. I have to get this over with sometime. I take a deep breath, and push the door connecting the two rooms open, and make my way over to the metal table she's been cuffed to.
She looks up at me, "William."
I take my place in the rickety chair across from her. "Mrs. Clay--that is your name right?--Macey Clay." I say looking into the case file I've been given. Like I would need to check to remember her name.
She raises an eyebrow at me, but doesn't question it. "Yes," she says clearing her throat, "that is my name."
I pause for a second, not knowing how to proceed.
"I'm sure you have a lot of questions," she prompts.
I clench my teeth, how can she be so calm right now. I've looked through her file, she's been brought in twice, but both times she's been released with no charges due to lack of evidence.
"Breaking and entering, attempted theft." My voice growing more angered.
She shrugs her shoulders, and that's the last straw.
"Really! You don't even care?" I let out a humorless laugh, "I taught you how to pick locks, and this is how you're using that skill?" I stand up and snap the folder closed. I back away from the table and push the chair back under it. I'm about to leave, but at the last second I turn around and move back towards the table.
I lean over the table and push my palm against the cold metal, "Once you are ready to take this seriously we'll talk, until then, have fun in here."
I turn around and push through the door making sure to lock it behind me. I lean my back against the wall for a few seconds before continuing down the hallway. How could she have gotten to me that fast already?
I finally slump down into my chair, dropping the file onto my desk. I quickly sit up as the Captain's office door opens, I relax once I see it's only Tom. He makes his way over to me, but instead of sitting down, he grabs his coat from the back of his chair and moves around his desk, stopping beside my chair.
"The Captain set up a interview with the news paper, remember that reporter who wanted to interview us about the Rodgers case we closed up a few weeks ago?"
"Yeah?"
"Well apparently they want to do a whole story on it, Captain says it's a good idea, that it'll be good to show the public some of what we've been doing. We're meeting with the lady in about fifteen minutes. So grab your coat, let's go partner!"
