I wake up late the next morning to a note on my bedroom door. "Madi - We went out to visit Grandma and Grandpa for the day with Lizzie and Ellie. Thought we'd let you sleep in and skip out on Gma and Gpa possibly seeing the tabloids. Love, Mom."
I scoff in the note's general direction, mainly at the fact that the stupid tabloids are still ruining my life and that people are still interested in them. This fifteen minutes of fame thing lasts a whole lot more than fifteen minutes.
On the bright side, I have the house to myself for the day. Grandma and Grandpa live an hour away, just long enough that Lizzie and Ellie wouldn't tolerate a visit without staying the entire day to make the drive worth it.
I glance out the window to see probably the most beautiful day I'd ever seen. The sun streams in through the glass and makes a pattern on my floor, and I get that feeling of happiness in my stomach that I only get when you know that this is one of those days that's going to be unforgettable because you've finally realized that it's summer!
I text Anna to come over <<It's a perfect day, wanna hang out at the beach and tan and swim?>> and throw on my favorite bikini, a lavender-colored strapless one that pushes my boobs up, with bottoms that are about an inch away from being far too scandalous, even for Florida.
I grab a towel and sunscreen and as I reach the top step the doorbell rang. I grin, knowing it has to be Anna. I bound down the stairs and fling the door open. "Heyyy - oh."
Matt stands before me, holding up one of the tabloids, the one with the photo of me looking suggestive as I lead Martijn up to my room. "What the hell is this, Madi?? What the hell are you doing, screwing around with this guy?"
I scoff at him and start to close the door in his face, but he pushes it back so hard it knocks against the wall with a loud, violent thud that gives me a sick feeling in my stomach.
"Answer me, Madi. What the fuck are you doing with this kid?" I back away from him slowly, step after step, before tripping over the edge of the rug and losing my balance, nearly falling over on the floor. In an attempt to regain my balance, I stretch an arm out in Matt's direction, and he grabs my wrist with such force I wince. "Ow, Matt, stop. Get out!"
"Don't try to tell me what to do. Explain this cover, Madi, huh? You think you can screw around with this guy just cause he's a famous singer or whatever?"
"He's a DJ," I whine pitifully, trying to peel his grip off my wrist with my free hand. "And you can't tell me what to do! Don't come crying to me because your little side bitch decided she was too good for you."
Matt's eyes darken dangerously. "How the hell did you know about that." My eyebrows raise and eyes widen in surprise. What?
"I said - "
"Yeah, whatever, Matt, I heard you," I scowl at him in a sudden burst of bravery. I think being around Martijn has made me more courageous. His eyes narrow further. "Tell me how you knew about that."
I roll my eyes, feeling more confident as the seconds tick by. "Lucky guess." It was the truth.
"I don't believe you... that scumbag told you, didn't he?" Matt ponders, and suddenly, I see him for who he truly was. Matt is nothing but a stupid, hairy jock that peaked in high school.
"Anyway, I'm here to take you back, since I know how much you missed me." I scoff and take a step away from him, even as his already cinching grip tightens on my wrist. "What are you talking about?" I nearly laugh this question at him.
He uses the leverage he has on my wrist to pull me as close to him as he can, and, wrapping his free arm around my waist, pushes his body against mine firmly. I try to lean away, and only succeed in barely being able to see his entire face clearly because of how near to him I was.
