Three years later

It was three years after I had run away with mom. I had grown accustomed to my new life at the dragon nest. Me and Toothless were standing at the edge of one of the cliffs. I smiled over at him. "You ready bud?" He smiled back at me and roared.  I jumped off the cliff. "Wo hoo!" Toothless jumped after me. Soon we were falling side by side. I beamed at him. "Yeah!" He gave me a gummy smile. I turned in midair and pulled myself onto his back. "Now!" He unfurled his wings, and the wind caught them. We glided over the bewilderbeast's pool, and I waved at him. "Hey big guy!" He rumbled a greeting at me, and we flew back to the cave. Mom was by the fire. "How'd it go, son?" I dismounted Toothless and walked over to her smiling. "Great! He caught me this time!" She laughed. "So, the bewilderbeast didn't have to save you again?" I nodded. "Yeah, not this time." I skewered a fish and sat down next to mom. "I was thinking that tomorrow we could try jumping the cliffs on the east end of the nest." She smiled and ruffled my hair. It had gotten much thicker over three years. "Oh, you're just like your father. He was such a daredevil at your age." I smiled to myself. Toothless nudged my back. I tossed him a fish and turned my attention back to mom. "Are we gonna fly outside the nest later?" She nodded. "Just as soon as I can get your armor fixed."  I blushed. After I had outgrown my tunic and vest mom had made me a new shirt and boots. She had also made me scale mail cover armor and wooden shoulder guards. Unfortunately, me and Toothless's stunts had caused the leather sewn over the wood to tear. I stood up and brushed myself off. "I'm going to the forge." She kissed my cheek. "Alright Hiccup." I started to run for the door. She called after me. "Hiccup , just be careful. I don't think I need to remind you what happened yesterday." I knew exactly what she was talking about. A misplaced hammer swing had almost taken off my fingers, causing me to shout in surprise, causing a terror named Sharpshot to shoot a fireball at me in surprise, almost taking my head off. I didn't let this on and I turned around and ran backwards so I could face her. "When am I not careful?" She shot me a sideways glance. I blushed. "Uh, don't answer that!" I got out the door and turned around to find Cloudjumper inches from my face. "Whoa! Cloudjumper, don't do that!" He growled at me. I rolled my eyes. "Yes, I know she has a point gimme a break." I walked over to another cave a few yards away. Over my first few months at the nest I had converted it into a forge, since I had brought my personal tools with me when I left Berk. I lifted the leather curtain and walked in. It was simple. A pounding block, fire pit, table, and chest of my tools was all that there was. I pulled my leather apron on and picked up my latest project. A shield with a bunch of useful extras. I had gotten the idea after mom gave me my armor. If I had armor, I might as well have weapons, right? I mean, mom had her staff, so I needed something too. I checked the bola launcher, then turned to the door. "Sharpshot!" A green terrible terror flew in and landed on my shoulder. I had met him when I started building the forge. He lived in a hole in the wall over the door and hung around the forge when I worked. I pointed at the fire pit. "Light em up, and, please avoid my head his time." He flew over and lit the fire with a well aimed fireball. I stoked the flames, then picked up my pliers and held a piece of metal in the flames until it was red hot. I set it on the pounding block and picked up my hammer. This was going to be part of the shield rim when I was done with it. I pounded on the piece while Sharpshot sat on my shoulder watching me. I worked on the shield, and by the time I called it a night I had finished three more sections of the rim. Sharpshot sat on my head as I left, and jumped off and flew into his little hole as I passed underneath it. In the house, mom was tying off the leather thread on my shoulder guard. "I'm finished son. You want to go flying now?" I beamed. "Yeah!"
