"Em?" Mother called through the hall early that morning. She knew that I didn't like being woken up this early.

"Emily?!" this time she was shouting my name so I decided to answer, in order not to anger her more.

"What..." I said sleepily and half hearted ,"and stop calling me Emily."

Knocking over papers mother responded. "Fine Em.. did you forget that today was our road trip?"

"No..I packed last night. You know, so I could sleep in."

"Whatever, oh hey Em? Could you go under my bed and get my emergency kit for the trip?" She asked, but there was something up with her voice. Something wrong.

I ignored it being as tired as I was at the time, "Sure." I left my room and went to hers. Under the bed sat her gold colored kit. Mother loved to decorate her kits and bags. It was like an obsession with her.

All of a sudden I heard the car start. "Nah, there just playing me." I said. But the car engine didn't stop. " Wait..." I ran to the window to see what was going on. What I saw was the long green car pulling out of the driveway leaving me behind. I couldn't believe it.

"They left me."

Then I heard my brother Jacob running up the steps. A wave of relief swept over me as I ran out the door. To my surprise I saw my fifteen year old twin brother sitting on the carpet covered floor, but instead of his usual happiness, he had a shocked expression on. Then... it hit him just as it had me just a few moments ago. We knew they weren't coming back. He burst out in tears and I joined him, sitting down next to him was a little comforting. Now at least I knew I was not alone.

A sudden bark came from down the steps. Another Comforting wave came and Jacob and I ran charged down them. This time, faster than ever, tears running down our cheeks we hugged our loved dog, Shamus . Crying more and more every minute I suddenly came to my senses' realizing I still had the emergency kit from earlier in my hand.

"Jacob, look." both of us gazed at the dazzled kit. "Let's see what's it". I opened it and saw a few things: Bandages, two water bottles, three cereal bars, and one five dollar bill. "Well.. it's better than nothing." I whispered. Jacob looked at me with his eyebrow raised. We both knew that if our parents really had abandoned us we weren't going to be able to survive off cereal bars.

We looked up as we heard the light pitter patter on the roof. Just our luck, rain. Which soon turned to a heavy brew of rain, wind, thunder, and lightning, which made the perfect combination to make our day even worse.

" I think there's some candles in the cabinet over there." Jacob said sadly.

Just days before, our mother had cancelled the electricity services, water services and the heating company for this month long "trip". With only the kitchen light as our guide, we walked over to the cabinet and took out six small candles and two matches. We lit the candles.

Then of course everything just got worse.
Already we were two children alone fending for ourselves and then, then our clumsy dog had to be afraid of lightning. So afraid I might add that he fell on top of Jacob. Jacob knocked down all six candles. A bright fire roared from the floor where mom had knocked over the stack of papers earlier. Getting bigger and bigger by the minute Jacob and I screamed, grabbed the dog, his leash and the emergency kit. The fire roared behind us and sweat poured down both of our faces. Fear imprinted and we ran outside. Only to watch our beloved house that we had so many good memories and so many bad, burn to ashes. Crying we ran away from the smoky storm.

Into the forest behind our dead house was the most comforting place we could find. As deep as we could go. Avoiding all the ivy and bugs our ran turned into a sprint. The forest was our last hope. As twins we both suddenly remembered that when we where little, we built a tree house here. Excitement ran through us and a little hope came.

We ran to the back of the tree house to find the tall rotting wood latter and a small entrance up to the tree house. Long ago it had been a beautiful little house. Now the bright red paint had peeled at the edges. The bright green roof now had holes scattered around it. We began to climb the splintered wood scratching our legs. Once we were at the top of the house we shoved ourselves in the door way to look at our new home. It was a lot smaller than we remembered. The tiny chairs like those from KinderCare. Crouching we crawled to the small pad we would use as a bed. Laying down we started breathing heavily.

I began to take a look around the place. Rotted floor sat beneath us that looked questionably secure. I began to take notice of the shudders that used to be a dark magnetic blue, and that they are now more of a moldy grays color. When out of the blue someone touched my shoulder.

I gave a shake then realized that it was Jacob. " Hey," he whimpered quietly. " Shamus is still down bellow," he sighed then proceeded to the bath tub we used to get Shamus up when we were little.

I examined the un-secure rope and took the chance. I gave Shamus a whistle and with that he was in the tub. Jacob and I heaved up the tub until out heavy dog was aboard. We ran our fingers through his shaggy hair that needed grooming. "Jacob," I cried in panic." There is a man out there, he's watching us," I examined the man. In his dark brown leather coat, he had a murderess look to him. His dark gray, almost black eyes sent a chill through my spin and I went through a moment of darkness. I thought I might never leave it, till I looked at my brother. I noted that he looked the same way I had. With fear.

"Jacob" I said attempting to snap him out of the dark. "Come on, let's go to sleep. It's been a long day," I didn't want to sleep and I won't. Not now anyway. I figured if I could get Jacob to sleep without complaint, I could get some time to process what just happened.

"Do you really expect me to fall asleep now," he protested. "With that creeper staring at us."
