Chapter 1~

"Jess watch out!" I squealed and pulled my best friend, Jessica, back into the river of students.

"If we don't hurry or find another way around we won't get good seats!" She yelled back at me.

"Well you can't go past the black line so too bad." I replied with an eye roll she didn't see. I held on tighter to her backpack as she picked the pace up. The teachers had literally lined the gym with themselves so you wouldn't walk on the inside part if it. I didn't know why, but I was a rule follower, so I wasn't going to step in there.

"Get out of the way, asshole!" She yelled at an upperclassmen, and then shoved him to the side. I let out a frustrated sigh.

"Sorry!" I apologized for her. Today was Friday of the second week of school, and also our first pep rally. The gym bleachers were separated into four different parts, freshman, sophomores, juniors, and seniors. The other side of the gym was for overflow, band, cross country, and volleyball. The teams would switch out when their season was over. (When volleyball ends, basketball would take it's place, and so on.) I saw Jess look over at the freshman section, and then a small smile spread across her face.

"JESS DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!" I yelled at her. She didn't hear me, or acted like she didn't anyways. Before I could stop her she ran between two teachers, dragging me behind her. I hid my face in her bag as teachers yelled at us to get back in line. I heard a few students clap and cheer, which caused mostly everybody to do the same. I felt my cheeks flame up from embarrassment. When I did look up I saw Jess pushing a cheerleader out of the way and running between two more teachers. We ran up into the gym bleachers, Jess collecting several high fives, before they could yell at us. We took our seats, and I gave Jess an angry look.

"What?" She asked and smiled innocently. I rolled my eyes at her, I never did anything to draw attention to myself. Ever.

Mrs. Boitman started the pep rally by bringing the cheerleaders out who did a average cheer. Then the band played the fight song and the football team ran into the gym. Everybody cheered and clapped as they high fived each other. After the crowd died down the drill team came out and did their routine. After that the captain of the cross country team, volleyball team, and the quarterback came down and announced the times of their games and where they were playing. I couldn't help but stare at the quarterback. He's practically got every girl around his finger, including me, but I wasn't about to show that. His hair was perfectly light brown and he had the most amazing blue eyes I've ever seen, and besides that he's got the body. A girl can dream, can't she? After they finished then the band played another song as the color guard did their routine.

After that the cheerleaders came out and danced to "Footloose". It was actually pretty good, some guys started joining in from the crowd, which was obviously planned, and then one guys ran from one end of the gym to the other, and did two front flips earning wild cheers and whistles from the crowd. They finished their dance and then Mrs. Boitman announce the homecoming dance date, and ticket prices. Last, and definitely least, they played the school song. We were dismissed after that. Jess and I walked out of the gym and into the warm afternoon.

"I saw you staring at Luke Obenham!" She squealed accusingly.

"You're kidding right?" I played off. I was always good at lying. Not sure why, I was a rule follower, no reason to lie, but everybody always believed me.

"Why don't you ever like anybody! It's no fun!" Jess grunted in frustration, but it was true. The closest thing I had to a crush was on Todd Fredrickson in the 7th grade. He was pretty cute, and he was new, I guess mysterious was the right word to use there. Every girl fell for him. I saw I had no chance with him, and just dismissed the feeling. Nobody ever knew about it. Not even Jess, but it wasn't important now.
