Laura's toes were buried deep into the sand.
"Please don't go," Ross pleaded in a soft whisper. Laura looked down to her feet, where she saw a everlasting portal, waiting for her to jump in.
"I don't want to Ross, I really don't. But I have to take care of my mom," she reached for his hand, and squeezed it. Tears welled up in Ross's eyes. "I might never see you again," he whispered weakly. "Don't say that," Laura urged. "Who knows? Perhaps I'll fall into a pond and we'll meet again." She gave him a sad smile.
Ross merely nodded, squeezing her hand, and swinging it. Laura smiled, and faced the ocean. As the bright sun hit her pale face, tears started rolling down her cheeks. Why does life have to be so unfair?
Her body started shaking. "Wait no!" Ross exclaimed. "Don't, please Laura, please." Looking at his eyes, Laura felt uncertainty, guilt, and she was lost of what she needed to do.
Looking away, Laura's eyes found the sand. "I'm sorry Ross, I'll always remember you," she breathed. She walked further and further into the ocean, and Ross ran after her.
"No," he said, his voice shaking. "You could stay here, you could be happy, you could be my wife." Laura sadly shook her head. "Need beats the want," she said. "But sometimes, want is what you need," Ross said.
Laura shook her head again.
The water was at her waist. Her head lined with Ross's knees. "Let go, Ross, you can find someone else who loves you, maybe I was just a preparation for your true love." Both of them thought of Stormie's letter, the mysterious girl she'd written.
She sank deeper.
Ross knelt by her, wiping the tears rolling down her cheeks. "I'll miss you," she said. "Me, too," Ross whispered. Both of them whispered, "I love you."
Ross picked her up by her waist, her back towards the sunset. He stared into her eyes, to the stubborn girl whom was so hard to convince, to chase. Her brown eyes stared back at him, and written deep in her eyes, was the last farewell, as she disappeared into nothing but precious memories.
