Dr. Harleen stared at the man standing in front of her with slight dismay. It struck her hard that she had such feelings for a psychotic criminal. A criminal she helped break out of his small cell in a city of concrete rooms. Arkham's living conditions in the mental hospitals and asylums were appalling. And J just wanted to get out of there, he told her. Escape the screams of extreme pain echoing through the halls and haunting every move they made. Including the doctors; such as Harleen.
When Dr. Harleen first walked through the double, gray doors of Arkham Asylum, she knew this would be the job she'd love. She'd be the one to help all the poor souls that lay in their steel boxes with doors bolted shut. She'd aid them back to the illusion the rest of humanity lived with; sanity.
Then she met J. He opened up to Harleen. He told her he was addressed as 'The Joker' due to his psychotic, prankster mind.
Dr. Harleen began to fall for his jokes, his stories, everything about him was just to die for, she thought. She loved him and she was sure he loved her back.
"J?" She gulped as though she were getting ready for her daily beating. The beatings that left her abdomen and neck bruised almost horrifically. She'd come back to him for one reason...
The Joker turned to face her. His skin deep smirk again falling to a frown. A once-in-a blue moon frown that only appeared for Harleen. He opened his mouth to answer, revealing silver casings and fillings covering his yellow teeth. "What, Harl!? Can't you see I'm busy?" The Joker leaned forward and widened his arms as though he were showing Harleen what he was doing. They stood in a dark room, graffiti covering the walls. Not another soul was in the room. It was just more proof that he was insane.
"J, I need—" Harleen attempted to let the words out but they got stuck on her throat. What she was about to say could effect their relationship enormously. It could help them a lot or it could just drive J further away from her; something she was ready to risk. Harleen needed to get this off her chest.
Harleen gulped once more. The Joker grew impatient.
"I need you to know... That night.... A few months ago..." Tears rolled down her now reddening cheeks.
The Joker's heart sank and it was clearly visible in his grey eyes. His soulless eyes.
"You're?..." He didn't dare finish his sentence. He knew what it all meant. He remembered what happened.
"Maybe,"
Joker always regretted that night. He always knew there'd be consequences to his drunken actions.
"I love you, Puddin. I need you now more than ever." Harleen wrapped an arm around her now ever so slightly throbbing stomach.
It frightened Harleen when J came in closer to her. He reached out for her arm, slow and anxiously moving.
Harleen feared for herself but her child was her main priority. She couldn't let anything happen to it. It would mentally break her.Joker took both of her hands and held them out in front. He stared longingly at her hands and Harleen wondered why she hadn't yet been beaten half to death. As usual, Harleen jinxes everything.
Joker yanks her by her wrists and as she falls forward, Joker brings up his knee with full force; right into her gut.
Blood spouts from Harleen's mouth and splashes the ground and J's half buttoned down, maroon shirt that had barely any stains on it despite him wearing it very often.
J let go of Harleen and she immediately wrapped her arms around her waist and squeezed tight to stop the agony. It was useless. The pain was too extreme. Yet she could stand. So Harleen did what she had never done to MrJ before. She pulled back her arms past her body and swung them forward at MrJ with full force; sending him crashing towards a cold concrete wall.
Tears rolled over her cheeks and anger boiled up fiercely inside of her; ready to burst out at any second!
"J!!" She screeched with everything she had in her. Harleen's voice echoed off of every wall, bouncing back at the anger filled, limp man wincing on the ground.
Harleen had completely forgotten she was even in pain. Instead, a different pain took over.
"I don't know w—why I love you; or loved. You're not the Joker. You're just a joke." Harleen spits the remaining blood that was in her mouth onto Joker's expensive boots.
Joker tortured Harleen; turned her insane. She couldn't have her intelligent side and alter ego live under the same name and identity.
"Harleen. You don't understand..." J coughed up a small amount of blood. It was less than what Harleen had.
Harleen lowered her eyebrows and gave him a cold hard stare. "The name's Harley. Ya sicko..." She lifted her chin and looked down on the Joker. He longed to tell Harley what was on his mind. He closed his eyes as Harley moved into the darkness and out of sight.
Harley had to get back to Task Force X. She knew she'd made the mistake of coming back to her boyfriend. Harley still loved him; she always would. But sometimes you have to let go...
If she did have a child, she wouldn't be able to alert anyone. Not even Waller could know.
Or Floyd...
