Chapter 1
Chapter 1
The First Crash
Where’s the charge nurse?
I’m not sure.
Why Paul?
Because they’ve cut three surgeries from the schedule and I wanted to see if one of us externs could leave, because I have to make a trip and leaving now would be better than this evening. Oh, there he is. Dan! I was wondering if you minded sending me home early, because three surgeries were cut from the schedule and I have a trip to make.
Oh? Where to?
Northern West Virginia. My parents live there and one of my brother’s friends is having a graduation party from high school.
Yeah, I don’t see why not.
Just punch out and put it in the sign out log and I’ll sign you out as leaving early. Thanks Dan and I will.
Ah, Wal Mart here we go. I need to get a cooler, some socks and a pair of denim shorts and I’ll be on my way. That’s it I’m packed and ready to get on the road. I’ll just pack this box and pillow in the passenger seat and strap it in with the seat belt. And off I go on Interstate 79 North.
Going along at about 70 mph and thinking. Oh my God. My head. Why is there gravel hitting me in the side of my face. Oooouuuuucccchhhh, my right eye hurts like hell.
There’s a cloud of dust here and it looks like it’s been here before we came around the corner Mark.
I see that Jewell.
I’ll park here and we’ll start walking up the interstate.
Look over there. There’s a tractor trailer stopping. Maybe he saw something.
Hey ya’ll. What did you see?
Nothing.
What about you. I saw what looked like a blue vehicle tumbling end over end five to six times and then disappear as I pulled my rig over to the side of the road.
Where did it get off to?
Don’t know, but its here somewhere. We’ll start walking up this way if you want to walk down that way and we’ll see what we find. Okay. Mark, I’m starting back down the hill.
Walking back down the interstate.
Mark!!
What is it Jewell.
I’ve found it. It’s a truck and it’s lodged down there in that ravine among a bunch of trees.
Do you have a cell phone sir?
Yes I do.
Can you call 911? Thank you. I’m a nurse and I’m going to go down there and see if anybody in that truck needs help.
Well if you’re going down Jewell I’m gonna go too to help keep you steady, because it looks like the only way to get access to the inside is through the back window or through the passenger side window and it’s facing up.
Alright, if you steady me I think I can get inside through the rear window. Oh my God!! What is it Jewell.
It’s a young boy and he has a CAMC carryon bag with him.
