Jennifer's POV

I wipe away my tears as I see Luke come into the station.
"Hey buddy!" I say smiling a little.
"Jen what's going on?"
"Shh, it's okay." I hug him.
"Where's mom?"
"Hey Luke!" I turn to see my dad.
"Dad."
"So you two are going to be moving in with me."
"What?! What about mom?"
"Let's talk about that later."
"Dad, where, is, mom?"
"Sit down kids. Come on, please?"

My dad ushers us to a bench and I put my arm around Luke. My dad squats down and hold our hands.
"Emma was. Huh, Emma went to-"
"Sir, I can tell them if it's easier." The cop comes over.

"What's happening?!" I yell.
"Is mom dead?" Luke asks breaking the silence.
"Luke!" I say shocked.
"Why else would dad have such a hard time talking to us?"
"You shouldn't ask something like that!" I hold back the tears.
"I'm sorry to tell you this, but your mother was shot."
"Oh my god." I cover my mouth.
"She was at Derek's, and he held her at gun point."
"Oh god." Luke says and squeezes my hand.
"We tried to get her out."

"Did you get Derek?" I say. 

"We negotiated for her release."

"Did you arrest him?" I ask louder. 

"No."

"Why the hell not?" I yell.

"Jenny, clam down." My dad says with his hand on my shoulder. 

"No I'm not going to calm down. Why didn't you arrest the man that shot my mother?!"
"Because he shot himself."

I stand up and grab my bag. I walk to the door.

"Jen where are you going?" Luke asks.
"I need some fresh air."

I walk out and head back to my house. It's the first place I need to go, and the last place I wanna be.

Grayson's POV

Luke never showed up for tryouts, but I was able to save him a spot for tomorrow. I can't believe Jenny blew me off today. She seemed different, like someone I could actually understand, but now I'm confused as ever.
I'm sitting my roof again and I look up from my homework to see Lexi walking home.

"Oh look who decided to show up now!"
"Not now Grayson."
"Was blowing me off once not enough?"

I jump down off the roof and walk toward her.

"Please, just not now."
"Why are you avoiding me Jen? What did I do wrong?"
"Nothing, I just need some-"
"Don't tell me nothing when I can obviously tell there is something else okay! No more mind games."
"I'm not trying to play a fucking mind game Grayson. Believe me that is the last thing I want to do right now."
"Sure. Just forget it."
"You wanna know why I missed lunch?"
"Yeah, I would like to know. Also why you can't freaking text me you can't come!"
"I got pulled over for speeding to get to school."
"Serves you right for going to East."
"Yeah well I won't be much longer, so you get your wish of me going to your fucking school."
"What?"
"I'm not old enough to live on my own so I have to move in with my dad."
"Why would you live alone?"
