This is it, I thought. It was now or never.
“Okay, hun. Step right up and walk right up to the ‘X’ on the floor. Good luck!” said the guy with the headset. I nodded and looked back to my dad and younger brother, who gave me thumbs up. I nodded to myself.
I can do this.
I walked on stage with my head hung low and stopped in front of the ‘X’. Slowly, I looked up slowly and my eyes widened when I saw the amount of people.
“Hello, what’s your name and how old are you?” asked the judge in the middle, Nicole.
“Uhm, Skylar Williams and im 15 years old.,” I said. I heard the people laugh and I knew my face was red.
“Mind saying that into the mic so we can hear ya, darling?” Louis said.
I knew my face was 50 shades of red, I nodded and brought the mic up to my face. “Skylar Williams. I’m 15.”
“And where are you from?” Simon asked.
“Sheffield.”
“Why are you here?”
“Uhm…I promised my mother I would go after my dreams and my dream has always been to sing so that’s why I’m here,” I said, my voice shaky as I remembered the promise she asked me to make on her death bed.
“Good, so what will you be singing for us?” Nicole asked.
“We’ll Be a Dream by We The Kings,” I said, looking back down at my feet.
“Okay, well good luck, darling,” Simon said.
I took a deep breath and I heard the track and began to sing my heart out. “Do you remember the nights we stayed up just laughing, smiling for hours at anything. Remember the nights we drove around crazy in love?” I looked up at the judges as I held that note and they were smiling. This gave me a bit of confidence to start the chorus, “When the lights go off, we’ll be safe and sound. We’ll take control of the world like it’s all we have to hold on to and we’ll be a dream. Do you remember the nights we made our way dreaming, hoping of being someone big. We were so young then, were too crazy, in love. When the lights go off, we’ll be safe and sound. We’ll take control of the world like it’s all we have to hold on to and we’ll be a dream.” I finished that with a steady, long, high note.
I looked up at the judges. They were standing up along with them was the entire arena. I covered my mouth with both my hands and my eyes were teary. The applause died down and judges sat down.
“Those were quite some notes, darling,” Simon said.
“Thank you,” I said, this time in the mic.
“You have such a sweet voice but the minute you started singing, man I wasn’t expecting that. You’ve got talent!” Nicole said. I smiled and thanked her.
“ I agree with both of my fellow judges. It’s just the fact that you are so young that bothers me. You are just a tad bit young.” I nodded but still kept the smile on my face.
“Well, Louis. I think you don’t understand the entire concept of this place. This place is to find young talent. Anyways, guys I think its time to vote. Louis?” Simon said.
“Listen Skylar, I still think you’re too young, but yes.” The arena cheered along with me.
“Yes from me Skylar,” Nicole said.
“Thank you,” I murmured.
“Well, dear Skylar. You’ve got three yeses,” Simon said.
The tears streamed down my face. “Thank you! Thank you so much! I won’t let you down!” I said as I walked off the stage.
I walked down the stairs to be embraced my both my dad and my little brother, James.
“You did so good!” He said into my hair.
“I did it for mum.” I said.

It was time for boot camp and I am so nervous. This would make me or break me. We did a dance routine in five different groups. In my group there was this dark skinned boy who walked off the stage. Everyone looked after him. As our group got ready to dance, the choreographer asked where he was. No one knew. Simon then set off to find him. Minutes later the both came back and he set the boy, whose name is Zayn, in front line. He did the routine along with us. After that we were removed from the stage and waited. I waited with the girls. Some of them talked to me some didn’t.
“I really hope we make it,” said Susan, she was one of the few girls actually talking to me.
“I really hope so too Susan.” I said.
They called the boys on stage. Then the over 25’s. Then the groups. And finally the girls. We all stood in line. Susan’s name was I hugged her as she walked off the stage. I waited for my name to be called. It wasn’t. I walked off the stage. I had no idea what I was feeling. I was numb. I really was. I waited by the lobby along with the other girls who hadn’t been called. I was about to leave when I man with a headset walked onto the lobby.
I just tuned him out until I heard my name. “The judges would like to talk to you one more time.”
I walked on stage with four other girls. On the other side, there were five boys including Zayn.
“Uhm Skylar honey. We would like you to go stand with the boys,” I looked up at Nicole, she smiled in encouragement. I slowly walked towards the boys and they smiled shyly.
“I actually quite like that.” I heard Simon murmured.
“So ladies and gentlemen. We have brought you back because we thought you had great potential and it should not be wasted. Obviously, we did not pass you as individuals but we would like to give you another chance as groups. “Nicole explained.
“So we I’m going to give you an opportunity that as you are standing, to go to the judges houses.” Simon said.
I felt like the air was knocked out of me then someone embracing me.
I made it! We jumped around and I hugged these five strangers who I didn’t know in the long run would become my best friends.
