Chapter 27

Michael’s POV

“I just don’t understand why she wouldn’t tell me she was dating that guy,” I said angrily, as I chucked a rock into the lake.

I was standing on the shore next to the gazebo, putting my anger into throwing rocks into the lake. Nick was sitting on the railing of the gazebo, watching me as he swung his leg back and forth, back and forth, as he let me rant.

“I mean, I even straight up asked her ‘Do you have a boyfriend?’ and she said, and I quote, “No I have never had a boyfriend,’” I said growling as I threw another rock, watching it skip across the water once, twice, three times, then plunging down into the water.

“I don’t know, man. Are you sure they’re dating?” Nick asked me. I whipped around and glared at him. He put his hands up in surrender at my hostile glare.

“Whoa, man, chill, I’m just asking. Sure, he slung his arm around her, but are they actually a thing?” he asked me innocently.

I reached down and picked up another rock, throwing it up in the air and catching it a couple times. I thought about what Nick had asked. Maybe I had jumped to conclusions when I saw them in the hallway.

Sighing, I pulled my arm back and threw the rock out into the water as far as I could, watching it fall and splash into the water. I turned to face Nick, who was watching me with a raised eyebrow.

I rolled my eyes at his reaction to my throw. “You really think they aren’t together?” I asked him.

“Pretty positive. I see Ivy around school a lot and I’ve never seen her with that guy before,” he told me. I sighed and looked back out over the lake. The sun was just about down so it was getting pretty dark. Mom would be calling soon wanting me home.

“Okay, I trust you and I know you wouldn’t sugar coat it on me if she was with him,” I said turning to face Nick as he jumped down from the gazebo.

He walked over, slapping me upside the head with a scowl. “You would really doubt me, man?” he said. I rubbed the back of my head as I followed him up the path back to the trucks.

“Sh*t, you didn’t have to smack me,” I gripped as we made it to the trucks.

“Whimp,” I heard him mumble. I grabbed him in a headlock, Nick yelling out in pain.

“What did you say?” I asked in fake anger.

“Michael! Man, let me up?!” Nick said angrily. In all honesty, I would have left him in that hold a lot longer if my phone didn’t vibrate in my back pocket. I let him up, laughing as he scowled at me as he fixed his hair. Such a girl I thought as I reached into my pocket and pulled out my phone.

It was flashing with a new text message. What? Mom can’t text, so who would be texting me? I opened the message to see it was from Ivy.

Can u come by?

My eyes widened as I looked up at Nick, who was looking at me expectantly. Holding up my phone I showed him the text. He whistled as he clapped me on the shoulder.

“Good luck, man. I have to go, but let me know how it goes,” he said. We bumped knuckles as he walked past to his truck, climbing in and turning the engine.
