Dawan could not get the opportunity to receive proper education. She was going to an inferior quality school. That didn't mean any good for her. She strived for higher education. She aspired to do something great for the country and make her family proud of her. But, conditions were such that she couldn't dream big. She feared that having such great ambitions could hurt her mentally when she knew there was but a very little chance of them getting fulfilled.
On the other hand, Bo was becoming thinner as a result of not getting adequate food. It applied to Dawan, as well. She was getting paler and paler as the days ticked by. Soon, she had become as pale as death itself.
They all slept upon thin, brown mattresses on the hard floor. In the summertime, this wasn't too bad, but in the winter, freezing cold draughts blew across the floor all night long, and it was awful. They often went cold and hungry at that time of the year. The only meals they could afford were- bread and margarine for breakfast, boiled potato and cabbage for lunch, and vegetable soup for supper. What they had was barely enough for them to survive.
This is what is known as poverty.
This is the vicious cycle of poverty.
