Soul Mates

It was just another Monday, nothing special or was it? Joe’s alarm went off at 5:30 A.M. like usual. Joe sat up, rubbed her eyes, and stretching over to turn off her alarm’s buzz that had been screaming at her  to get up for about 5 minutes now. She sort of jumps after placing her feet onto the cold floor below her. “Moooooom!” She waited for an answer before she yelled again, not a sound. “I’m going to go shower.!” Joe grabbed a pile of clothes off her dresser and headed to the  bathroom.

After she was ready for school Joe walked downstairs to find her mom passed out on the couch. She sighed. “Not again mom.” She grabbed the blanket she always used to cover up her mom when she found her home from another binge of hers. Joe’s phone rang as she was picking her mom’s shattered Vodka bottle off the floor. Balancing the part of the bottle that wasn’t shattered under her arm and answering the phone. “Hey there JoJo!” said a familiar voice. Joe struggled as she tried to speak and clean up the broken bottle from the floor beneath her mother’s dangling hand.  “Hey...Uh-OW!” She had gotten glass stuck in her hand. “Joe, What’s going on? Is it your dad again?” The voice asked.

Shuffling the phone Joe replied “Hey Jake. No, he is still out of town. Mom is hung over and must of dropped her bottle on the floor when she blacked out so I was trying to clean it up and I got glass in my hand.” Sighing  Jake hung up. Joe went back to cleaning and wiping the blood on her jeans.

After 30 Minutes the doorbell rang. Joe yelled. “Come in!” Jake opened  the door carrying a broom, first aid kit, sour candy, cookies, chips and cereal. Joe looks up with her hair dangling into her eyes. Jake smiles shyly as he sets the stuff down except for the broom and first aid kit. He than kicked his shoes off and slid over to where Joe was wiping more blood off her hand.  Jake swept up all the broken glass into the trash then sat down next to Joe who was sitting on her knees staring at her mother  with tears in the well of her eyes.

Sitting down in front of Joe he pushed her hair behind her ears. and gently took her hand and placed it on his leg so the cut was pointing up. He carefully pulled the shard of glass out of her hand. Joe sat watching intently. After cleaning and bandaging her hand he slowly lifted her chin up to look into her dark brown eyes. After making eye contact she broke into tears. Jake hugged her closely as she cried.

After she had finished crying she looked up into Jake’s light blue eyes. He then slowly leaned in and kissed her. To his surprise she didn’t even pull away just kissed him back. Jake pulled away first and avoided eye contact. They sat hugging for a few moments but seems like hours before Jake spoke. “Joe?” He said with a quiet and shaky voice. “I-I-I Love You” Joe hugged him tightly then kissed his cheek. “I Love You Too” He smiled. “You do?” Joe nodded and stood up. “We need to go wait for the bus” She said with a smile. Jake held up his hand as if beckoning for her to help him up. “Man, you are old ain’t ya?” Jokingly asked Joe while pulling his hand. “Haha very funny. Now shut up and eat this fatty food I stole out of my fridge.” Jake said with a huge grin. The new couple walked outside after eating.

Jake sat down on the cement and Joe sat in his lap while they waited for the dreaded bus. After about 10 minutes of snuggling while they waited the bus finally pulled up. They climbed on and slid into the same seat where Jake wrapped his arm around Joe. The entire bus gasped. The two just laughed as they curled up waiting to get to school.

It was now after school and Jake was giving Joe a piggy back ride home. “Hey JoJo! Want to go get some FroYo?” Joe kissed the top of his head. “Yes!” The two walked into the frozen yogurt shop. After eating they finished their walk home but Joe stopped dead in her tracks when she saw her dad’s red truck. Jake grabbed her hand, kissed it then whispered into her ear. “Joe...I know you don’t want to face the way he breaks you and trust me it kills me to know you have to walk in there and have another shot at losing your life due to his anger. Just promise me you won’t cut tonight. I Love You Baby”  Joe looked at him and with tears in her eyes still managed to smile and say “Please come in with me? Just for a little bit” Jake nodded put an arm around her and walked into the storm shelter. “Jake, I don’t know where I would be if I didn’t have you.” They climbed through the cellar and into a secret passage that led to her room.

Jake sat down on the end of her bed.  Joe locked the door, turned up her music so she didn’t have to listen to her parents fighting then came over and straddled Jake. “Um...Joe?” She flipped her hair to the side then leaned in and kissed his neck. “Yes babe?” She replied pressing herself closer against him. “I Uh-...” He stammered. “Want me?” She whispered into his ear. “Yes but no. I respect you to much for that.” She leaned in and kissed his cheek. “Good boy, now I’m going to change” She walked over to her closet and pulled her shirt off. Her dad then barged in. “What is going on in here?!” He exclaimed in rage.

Jake jumped up. “Sir, its not what it looks like!” Joe walked  over and  pulled Jake away from her dad and said “Daddy, He wasn’t trying to do anything. It was all me he rejected me. I promise Daddy.” Her dad screamed loud enough to make the house shake. “GET OUT!!!” He pointed to the door. Jake walked over to Joe kissed her cheek and left. “Now for you missy” Her dad said inching closer and pulling off his belt. “You are daddy’s girl right?” Joe looked down at her feet. “Aren’t you?” He raised his voice. “Yes, I’m sorry Daddy. I just wanted to have a little bit of fun.” Joe cried. “Fun? You call being a slut fun?” He whipped his belt into the air and slashed her arm. “Well do you?” He slashed her again. “Just going to get knocked up? You little whore! Why would you want to do this to our family? Are you trying to ruin us? Imagine what your mom would think of this!” He kept beating her with his belt.

Joe fell to the ground, her arms coated in blood. Her father yelled at the sight of what he had done to his own flesh and blood. Then her mother barged in. “Steve! What have you done to our baby girl?” She rushed over to pick up the broken and bleeding girl. Joe was going in and out of consciousness, her dad rushed over. “Please wake up!” He cried. “I’m sorry! I didn’t mean it! Please sweetie. Please Please Please...” His pleads faded into tears as he checked for a pulse. He found nothing while the mom dialed 911.

An hour later the doctors announced that she had died from internal bleeding. The news spread through out the school and when it reached Jake he spiraled into deep dark depression.

1 Year Later

Jake is sitting alone holding a picture of Joe. He still hasn’t been able to get over her.  It seemed as though the world just forgot about her and moved on while he was trapped in the past just holding on by a thread; balancing on a tightrope as the ground shook below him. Then a sudden gust of wind blew the picture out of his hand. He chased after it but when he got to it he saw a bloody girl in the window beside him. She screamed the words “No Daddy! I’m sorry Daddy!  Please don’t! Da-”  Jake looked startled. “J-J-Joe?” The girl disappeared.

It was another week before he saw her again. This time was different though. He was just walking when she grabbed his shoulder. “Jake?” The blood covered girl said. “Joe?” His voice shook. “Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! I can’t believe it! You can see and hear me!” She smiled. “I-I-I d-don’t understand” Jake stuttered. “I need help! I need you to revenge my death and then you can join me. We can spend forever in the stars together. Like we always said we would as a little kids. Please...Do it for me?” She then faded away leaving Jake speechless.

The next day Jake walked over to her grave and said “I will do this for you baby.” He then walked to her house. Pulling the gun out of his bag he walked in and said “Put your hands up bitches!” they looked at him in shock. “What are you doing?”  yelled Joe’s mother. “I’m going repay the motherfuckers who killed a girl emotional and physical.” He then walked over to the dad and shot him in the leg and the same to the mom, then the next leg and arms. “You like that?” He screamed. This is what you made Joe feel like everyday. He looked at the mom and said “You drained her smile by never being sober” Then looked to the dad. “And you! you killed her! now watch your wife die!” He shot the mother 3 more times then the dad.  He walked to the cemetery and wrote a note. “I did it to save her”  He then pulled out a rope and slipped it around his neck, stepped onto a tombstone and tied the rope to a tree above. He then stepped down. His neck snapped and he hung next to Joe’s tombstone. Jake’s spirit was trapped on this Earth till he found the reason he died. As he wandered the Earth he ran into Joe. She stretched out her hand and he grabbed it. “Thank you. She whispered” The two broken souls then walked into the light healed for they were soul mates and now they can go to rest.
