Screaming. Crying. Roaring from the fires. These were the only sounds that sixteen year old Bonnie could hear. Her home, District 8 was getting bombed by Capitol hovercrafts as a punishment for rebellion. Bonnie was frantically running around District 8 searching for Twill. Twill was Bonnies teacher at school and they had schemed up a plan as while back to escape from District 8, but only when the time was right and that time was now. They had planned to escape with Twill’s husband and Bonnies whole family but Twill’s husband and Bonnies parents had all perished in the bombings. There was no telling where Bonnie’s two brother were and all she could worry about now was Twill and if she had brought the peacekeeper uniforms that she had stolen from the factories. This disguise would ensure them a ticket out of District 8 as soon as possible and as Bonnie stepped over flaming bodies that had been distorted due to flames she saw Twill waving at her through the dense scrubby bushes on the other side of the once perfect clean District 8 square. She sprinted over to Twill and as soon as they were both hidden they ditched their old clothes and changed into their peacekeeper disguises, they then started off towards the fence line.
“So how did you get out of school?” asks Twill curiously.
“I told Miss Hert that you needed me in the staffroom,” Bonnie replies with a smirk on her face. “Old cow believed me.”
Twill frowned at the comment about Miss Hert as they had been friends in school for as long as she had worked there. The pair were approaching the fence line and of course there was no one to be seen that was guarding it. The electricity was turned off as usual and the two quickly slipped through and ran as hard as they could without talking the whole way. Bonnie knew Twill was sad about her husband but she didn’t show any emotion and Bonnie knew not to bring up the topic for a while yet. After running for ten minutes, they had reached the top of a hill and turned back to see the smouldering ashes of District 8 that were still getting bombed. Bonnie and Twill could feel the vibrations through the ground.
“Goodbye District 8.” Says Twill and without warning she started pouring her eyes out.
“Come now Twill, it’ll get better. I know you miss Stern and lets hope he watches down on us and guides us the right way but for now we need to keep going! We need to reach District 13! It’s what we’ve planned for ages and we can’t give up now.” says Bonnie with a reassuring smile. And with that the two continued on in silence. They hadn't brought any supplies and after a day they started to get hungry.
"We can't go on like this if we dont even know how long we are going to be out here Twill," said Bonnie with a hint if desperation. "We need food now!"
"I know, I know Bonnie but it isn't easy to come by out here in the woods. I think we need to start making some weapons because the only thing I bought was my knife." Twill responds as she gets out her knife and starts to play around with it. "What hunting skills are you good at?"
"I can fish, and I can use a bow pretty good," says Bonnie not trying to show off too much.
"Well I can try make a bow and a spear, let's find somewhere we can camp," responds Twill.
After another day searching for a camping place, listening to Bonnie moaning and trying to get her bearings right, Twill spots a lake in the distance and on the edge there is a small hut. Twill yells out to Bonnie to hurry up and she speeds off like a lightning bolt to the hut. The door is a bit creaky but inside there is food and Twill can't help herself so she starts ramming food into her mouth. The hole in her stomach is now filled but as she starts on some crackers she notices something on it. A small mockingjay print. Bonnie finally reaches the hut and sees that Twill has scoffed half of the food by herself.
"What the hell Twill?!" yells Bonnie.
"Don't worry I left some for you! But look at this." She says as she lifts up the cracker to show Bonnie.
